Jane Tranter and Julie Gardner’s Bad Wolf production company has wrapped filming on their adaptation of Deborah Harkness’ ‘A Discovery Of Witches‘ it has been announced. They’ve also announced Philip Pullman’s epic fantasy ‘His Dark Materials‘ will be next.
‘A Discovery of Witches’ is a contemporary love story set against the backdrop of Oxford academic life, but in a world where a handful of witches, vampires, and demons live and work unseen amongst humans, hiding in plain sight.
Teresa Palmer (‘Hacksaw Ridge’, ‘Point Break’) stars as brilliant academic and historian Diana Bishop, a reluctant witch denying her heritage. The discovery of a manuscript in Oxford’s Bodleian Library throws her into the heart of a dangerous mystery – and into the path of enigmatic geneticist Matthew Clairmont (Matthew Goode – ‘Downton Abbey’, ‘The Good Wife’), who we discover also has a dark family secret: he is a vampire.

Written by Philip Pullman ‘His Dark Materials’ is one of the supreme works of imaginative fiction for both children and adults published in the twentieth century. The trilogy of novels has been published in more than 40 languages and has sold worldwide close to 17.5 million copies.
‘Northern Lights’ introduces Lyra, an orphan, who lives in a parallel universe in which science, theology and magic are entwined. Lyra’s search for a kidnapped friend uncovers a sinister plot involving stolen children and turns into a quest to understand a mysterious phenomenon called Dust. In ‘The Subtle Knife’, she is joined on her journey by Will, a boy who possesses a knife that can cut windows between worlds. As Lyra learns the truth about her parents and her prophesied destiny, the two young people are caught up in a war against celestial powers that ranges across many worlds and leads to a thrilling conclusion in ‘The Amber Spyglass’.
‘A Discovery Of Witches‘ will come to Sky One in Autumn 2018. No news on an air date yet for ‘His Dark Materials‘, but it is due to come to BBC One.
