Jay Hernandez Cast As ‘Magnum P.I.’ In Pilot Reboot
CBS has found their new ‘Magnum P.I.’, and it’s ‘Scandal’ and ‘Suicide Squad’ star Jay Hernandez.
The rebooted version of the show comes from Peter Lenkov and Eric Guggenheim, two of the people behind CBS’s long-running ‘Hawaii Five-O’ series. Lenkov was also showrunner on the ‘MacGyver’ reboot, so is no stranger to bringing 80’s action shows back to the screen.
The basic premise of the new iteration is pretty similar to the classic 80s show, with a few tweaks. Thomas Magnum (Hernandez) is a decorated ex-Navy SEAL who returns from Afghanistan and becomes a private investigator. He’s helped out by ex-Navy buddies TC and Rick. The biggest change comes with the character of Higgins who has been gender-switched in this itteration to be Juliet Higgins, a disavowed former MI:6 agent. Together they, solve crimes, taking on cases no one else will touch, along with exploring the bond between a group of ex-military guys as they deal with the aftermath of war.
Along with playing Curtis Pryce in ‘Scandal’ and Diablo in ‘Suicide Squad’, Hernandez has also appeared as Dimitri in ‘The Expanse’ and Dante in ‘Nashville’.
The original 80s drama starred the world’s greatest acting moustache (carried on the face of Tom Selleck) in the title role and ran for 8 seasons. No news on whether Jay will be cultivating his own facial hair for the role, but I actually think he could pull it off…
One thing that has been confirmed is film director Justin Lin, who directed a number of the ‘Fast & Furious’ movies and ‘Star Trek Beyond’ will be behind the camera for the pilot, so expect a lot of action! Assuming the show goes to series, I would also expect some crossover with ‘Hawaii Five-O’, if that show gets picked up for another season.
‘Magnum P.I.’ is only a pilot at the moment, but we’ll keep you updated should it land a series order.
