US network ABC has given a series order the currently untitled 90’s spin-off to ‘The Goldbergs’ it has been announced.

Created by ‘The Goldbergs’ showrunner Adam F. Goldberg and Marc Firek ‘The Goldbergs Spin-Off‘ aired as a “backdoor pilot” in January as part of the main series. It is set in the 1990’s and follows the teachers at William Penn Academy, who, despite their eccentricities and crazy personal lives, are heroes to their students. The cast comprises of various ‘Goldbergs’ supporting players who will move over to the new show including Tim Meadows as Principal Glascott and Bryan Callen as Coach Mellor. Also moving across is main show series regular AJ Michalka who will reprise her role as Lainey Lewis.

The spin-off show was originally piloted back in May last year but narrowly missed out on getting a pickup. In that version, there was more of a focus on the family-life of Principal Glascott and his sister, played by Nia Long, who had two daughters at the school. After Long got a regular gig on ‘NCIS: LA’, Firek came up with the idea of retooling the show into more of a workplace comedy and airing it as part of this seasons ‘Goldbergs’ run.

Firek is set to right the spin-off series based on an idea by him and Goldberg. The duo will exec produce alongside Doug Robinson, Sony Pictures TV and ABC TV Studios.

No news on a UK pick up for the show yet, but ‘The Goldbergs’ currently airs on E4 in the UK.
