In more news that will probably not shock anyone, Hulu has renewed ‘The Handmaid’s Tale‘ for a 3rd Season the streaming service announced today.
The Emmy and Golden Globe Award-winning series stars Elisabeth Moss as Offred, a handmaid in Gilead, a totalitarian society in what was formerly part of the United States. Facing environmental disasters and a plunging birth rate, Gilead is ruled by a twisted fundamentalist regime that treats fertile women as property of the state.
Offred is a Handmaid in the Commander Fred Waterford’s (Joseph Fiennes) household, forced into sexual servitude as a last desperate attempt to repopulate a devastated world. In this terrifying society where one wrong word could end her life, Offred navigates between Commanders, their cruel wives, domestic Marthas and her fellow Handmaids – where anyone could be a spy for Gilead – with one goal: to survive and find the daughter that was taken from her.
Season 2 focuses on Offred’s pregnancy and her ongoing fight to free her future child from the dystopian horrors of Gilead. “Gilead is within you” is a favourite saying of Aunt Lydia (Ann Dowd), and as the show progresses, Offred and all our characters will fight against – or succumb to – this dark truth.
The 2nd Season has already had a record-breaking premiere for Hulu in the US, doubling its audience from Season 1, and helping the streaming service to surpassed 20 million US subscribers.
‘The Handmaid’s Tale‘ airs on Channel 4 in the UK and Season 2 is due to arrive in May 2018 (exact date TBC.)
