Netflix has picked up a brand new dark comedy from Ricky Gervais called ‘After Life‘ it has been announced today.
Meet Tony (Gervais), a lovely man who had a perfect life. But when his wife Lisa suddenly dies, Tony changes. At first, he contemplates taking his own life but then thinks, no… Instead, he decides to live long enough to punish the world by saying and doing whatever he likes from now on. He thinks it’s like a superpower – not caring about himself or anyone else – but it turns out to be tricky when everyone is trying to save the nice guy they used to know.
As with most of Gervais’ stuff, the show will be created, executive produced, directed by and stars himself. He’ll be joined by Charlie Hanson, who worked with Gervais on ‘Extras’ and ‘Derek’, as exec producer. The series will be six half-hour episodes.
This will be the latest in a continuing collaboration between Gervais and the streaming behemoth. He recently launched his latest stand up ‘Humanity’ on the service, and previously worked with them on the movie ‘Special Correspondents’ in 2016. Netflix UK also carries ‘Derek’, ‘Extras’, ‘The Office’, and the spin-off movie ‘David Brent: Life on the Road’.
‘After Life‘ has only just started pre-production so there’s no official air date yet, but I wouldn’t expect to see it before 2019.
