‘The Last Ship’ Will Sail Its Last Voyage With Season 5

Ever since US network TNT renewed The Last Ship for seasons 4 & 5 together last year, it has long been expected that the upcoming season would be its final outing. That has now been confirmed.

‘The Last Ship’ follows the crew of USS Nathan James as they try to save the worlds human and plant population following a global pandemic. Last season saw Tom Chandler (Eric Dane) return to the ship after having walked away from the Navy, leaving his boat in the capable hands of Captain Mike Slattery (Adam Baldwin). Whilst the ‘Red Flu’ threat was now under control, they had to deal with a new problem – the virus has jumped from people to infecting crops instead…

The show also stars Travis Van Winkle, Marissa Neitling, Christina Elmore, Jocko Sims, Bren Foster, Bridget Regan, Charles Parnell, Jodie Turner-Smith and Kevin Michael Martin.

There had already been a few hints this could be the final season after Travis Van Winkle posted on Instagram about Season 5 being a “series wrap”, before deleting it swiftly (presumably after an angry phone call from by a TNT Exec). Also, Jodie Turner-Smith, who is upped to series regular for the final season as Kenyan Navy Sergeant Azima Kandie, has already joined the crew of another ship… Although this time in space, as she takes the role of Melantha Jhirl in Syfy’s Nightflyers.

The showrunners have also confirmed, Season 5 will end the show properly and not on a cliffhanger, which is good to know!

The Last Ship‘ returns this Summer in the US, and usually follows late Summer/early Autumn in the UK on Sky One.
