The Crown‘ Season 3 has added a few more members of the royal family as it Netflix announces Josh O’Connor, Erin Doherty and Marion Bailey join the cast as Prince Charles, Princess Anne & The Queen Mother.

The Crown’ tells the inside story of two of the most famous addresses in the world – Buckingham Palace and 10 Downing Street – and the intrigues, love lives and machinations behind the great events that shaped the second half of the 20th century. As you probably already know by now, the production decided it was better to switch out the entire cast every two seasons for actors of a more appropriate age, rather than deal with ageing up the original cast with makeup.

Josh O’Connor takes the role of Prince Charles and will be a familiar face to fans of ITV series ‘The Durrells’, where he plays Lawrence. He also starred as PC Bobby Grace in ‘Ripper Street’ and popped up in a few episodes of ‘Peaky Blinders’, so he’s no stranger to historical British drama. He’s also due to appear in the BBC’s adaptation of ‘Les Misérables’ (based on the novel, so no songs) as Marius, with Dominic West and David Oyelowo, later this year.

“I am thrilled to be joining The Firm for the next instalment of The Crown,” commented O’Connor. “Seasons 3 and 4 will follow some of the most turbulent events in the Prince of Wales’s life and our national story and I’m excited to be bringing to life the man in the midst of it all. I’m very aware it’s a formidably talented family to be joining, but reliably informed I have the ears for the part and will fit right in.”

Erin Doherty has been cast as Princess Anne. The actress doesn’t seem to have that many tv credits to her name but has appeared in ‘Call the Midwife’, and also will star in the BBC’s adaptation of ‘Les Misérables’ as Fabienne.

“To be a part of the Crown feels both ridiculously special and surreal,” adds Doherty. “There is such a rare dynamic within Princess Anne that I am incredibly grateful to be able to explore. She is a woman of great strength and heart. I feel privileged to fight her corner.”

Marion Bailey will play Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother. She as appeared in various tv and film projects over the years including ‘Him & Her’, ‘Mr. Turner’‘The Bill’, ‘The Ruth Rendell Mysteries’, and ‘SS-GB’.

“Wonderful to be joining The Crown,” Bailey commented. “It’s a brilliant show and we have a tough act to follow but what a gift to be playing the fascinating and greatly loved Queen Mother. Thrilled to be on board and working with such a top-notch team.”

Exact details of the 3rd season have yet to be released, but we know it will span the 70’s era of UK politics which saw Harold Wilson become Prime Minister twice, with Edward Heath taking office in the middle. This era also includes Princess Margaret’s divorce, the 1972 miners’ strike and the assassination of Lord Mountbatten. It will also feature a young Camilla Parker Bowles whom Charles first met in 1971, and we could potentially see a young Diana Spencer towards the end of this season, as they first meet in 1977.

No exact date has been set for The Crown‘ Season 3 yet, but it will arrive in 2019 on Netflix.
