‘Captain Marvel’ Crashes In To A Blockbuster As First Trailer Land For New Marvel Movie

by Dave Elliott

Time to get excited once more for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as the first trailer for ‘Captain Marvel’ crashes onto the internet… Much like the titular character crashes through the roof of a Blockbuster Video store!

The story follows Carol Danvers (Bree Larson) as she becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes when Earth is caught in the middle of a galactic war between two alien races. Set in the 1990s (hence the Blockbuster store), ‘Captain Marvel’ is an all-new adventure from a previously unseen period in the history of the MCU.

One of the interesting points of this film is that it sidesteps the traditional origin-story. Danvers already has all of her powers, after leaving Earth and joining Starforce, a Kree military team lead by Mar-Vell (Jude Law). However, she finds herself back on Earth with questions about her past life, of which (judging by the trailer) she has little memory. This leads her to team up with a very much two-eyed Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), and a young rookie SHIELD agent by the name of Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg).

We also know the film will feature the return (although timeline-wise, it’s the first appearances) of Lee Pace as Ronan the Accuser and Djimon Hounsou as Korath. Other cast includes Gemma Chan (‘Humans’) as Kree sniper Minn-Erva, Lashana Lynch (‘Bulletproof’) as Maria Rambeau, one of Danvers’ oldest friends, and Ben Mendelsohn (‘Rogue One’) as Talos, the leader of the Skrull invasion of Earth.

For those of you not up on your Marvel bad guys, the Skrull are a shape-shifting alien race who invade Earth, taking the place of key figures on the planet. In the comic books, the Secret Invasion storyline revealed many of Earth’s heroes replaced by Skrull shape-shifters and had been posing as those heroes for a considerable length of time. It has been speculated that the introduction of the Skrull in ‘Captain Marvel’ could lead to elements from Secret Invasion being folded into the MCU, with some of the heroes we’ve been watching for the past 10 years not being who we think they are…

‘Captain Marvel’, which is directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, lands in UK cinemas on Friday, 8th March 2019.
