‘The Deuce’ Renewed For 3rd & Final Season

HBO has picked up the James Franco/Maggie Gyllenhaal drama The Deuce for a 3rd but final season the US network announced today.

Created by George Pelecanos and David Simon and starring James Franco (‘11.22.63’, ‘Angie Tribeca’) and Maggie Gyllenhaal (‘The Dark Knight’, ‘The Honourable Woman’), the series follows the story of the legalization and subsequent rise of the porn industry in New York’s Times Square from the early 1970s through the mid-1980s, exploring the rough-and-tumble world at the pioneering moments of what would become the billion-dollar American sex industry.

The show, which airs on Sky Atlantic in the UK, has only just started it’s 2nd Season run. The ratings have been down for the newer season compared to the first, but that is fairly common with dramas. The 2nd Season started with a 5-year time jump putting our lead characters in the middle of “the Golden Age of Porn.” This is a time when the dream of a mainstream X-rated film business is a suddenly a credible reality, and the culture of pornography and its blatant commodification of sex is finding increasing traction among more and more Americans.

“We’re always conjuring the last scene before we write the first. So much the better when we work for people who allow us to consistently plan, arc and execute as intended,” commented co-creator David Simon on Twitter. “Thanks, HBO, for the third and final season renewal and the chance for The Deuce to tell its full story.”

The Deuce‘ Season 2 is currently airing Tuesday nights at 10pm on Sky Atlantic in the UK.
