Every witch needs a Familiar, and just in time for her 16th birthday, Sabrina Spellman (Kiernan Shipka) meets her companion, Salem, for the very first time. Be warned though, this one seems to be a long way from the cute, sarcastic version you knew…
‘Chilling Adventures of Sabrina‘, starring Kiernan Shipka, imagines the origin and adventures of Sabrina the Teenage Witch as a dark coming-of-age story that traffics in horror, the occult and, of course, witchcraft. Tonally in the vein of Rosemary’s Baby and The Exorcist, this adaptation finds Sabrina wrestling to reconcile her dual nature – half-witch, half-mortal -while standing against the evil forces that threaten her, her family and the daylight world humans inhabit.
In the comic book, on which the series is based, Salem was originally a human named Samuel, who was turned into a cat as punishment by the witches of Salem Village for getting a witch named Abigail pregnant and refusing to marry her… In his “defence”, he didn’t know she was a witch at the time… not that it makes it right to attempt to run out on her and the baby…
In the clip, we see scratches on Sabrina’s window sill. As the teen witch looks around the room, she hears a voice calling her name and a figure in the shadows, before a little black cat saunters out to greet her. Whilst Sabrina in the clip calls him “such a pretty kitty”, don’t expect to see her holding him much in the show. In real life, Shipka keeps her distance from her furry pal, due to the fact she is allergic to cats.
