The much anticipated ‘Game Of Thrones’ prequel series not only seems to have gained a title but also two actors, as Naomi Watts & Josh Whitehouse are announced as the first cast members.

George R.R. Martin revealed on his blog the series will be titled ‘The Long Night’, with the pilot being written by Jane Goldman (‘Kingsman’, ‘Kick-Ass’, ‘X-Men: First Class’) and Martin, with Goldman serving as showrunner. Set thousands of years before the events of ‘Game Of Thrones’, the drama chronicles the world’s descent from the Golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour. Only one thing is for sure: From the horrifying secrets of Westeros’ history to the true origin of the white walkers, the mysteries of the East, to the Starks of legend… it’s not the story we think we know.

As you might expect, exact character details are being kept well under wraps for the moment, however, we do know Naomi Watts will be playing “a charismatic socialite hiding a dark secret.” Josh Whitehouse’s role has no details other than he has a “key role” in the show, but is thought not to be the main male lead.

Naomi Watts has starred in a host of tv shows and movies including ‘King Kong’, ‘Birdman’, ‘Mulholland Drive’, ‘Twin Peaks’, and ‘Gypsy’. She also gained Oscar nominations for her roles in ’21 Grams’ and ‘The Impossible’.

Josh Whitehouse starred in the movie ‘Northern Soul’, and recently completed filming on ‘The Happy Worker’ with Thomas Haden Church and Colm Meaney. He’s probably best known to British audiences as Hugh Armitage in the hugely popular BBC drama ‘Poldark’.

As was announced in May 2017, HBO commisioned five possible ‘Game Of Thrones’ spin-off series, with various writers developing possible scripts. Whilst Goldman landed the first pilot order, Martin comments that “there are still a couple of other possible prequels in active development. I can’t tell you the subject matter of those projects, no, sorry, wish I could.”

‘The Long Night’ is still at the pilot stage at the moment, so may not go to a full series… Although, you have to assume HBO will be very keen to lock in a replacement for ‘Game Of Thrones’, which comes to an end next year. We’ll let you know when we hear more.
