Discussions Are Already Underway For An ‘Orange Is the New Black’ Sequel

The final season of Orange Is the New Black hasn’t even landed yet, but production company Lionsgate Television are already in talks with creator Jenji Kohan about a possible sequel it has been announced.

The news came from Lionsgate TV Group chairman Kevin Beggs during an earnings call yesterday. “We’re really proud of the long run that Orange Is the New Black had,” he commented. “It remains one of Netflix’s most-watched shows. We’re ending on a high note. Keep in mind we own that series and will be distributing it for years to come. We’re already in discussions and, when the timing is right, we’ll talk further with Jenji about a potential sequel.”

It should be noted, these are very preliminary discussions right now, so nothing is set in stone, and there isn’t a show in active development. In an interview with THR back in July, exec producer Tara Herrmann talked about extending OITNB in various ways, but didn’t want it to feel like they were “robbing from the mothership” by launching into anything too quickly. There has been talk of following some of the more minor characters, such as couples Larry Bloom (Jason Biggs) and Polly Harper (Maria Dizzia) or Cal (Michael Chernus) and Carol Chapman (Deborah Rush). There was even the suggestion of a Broadway musical! However, she added, “We want people to pay attention to the show we’re making, not a musical number with Piper and Alex. But that could happen in the future, who knows!”

‘Orange Is the New Black’ stars Taylor Schilling as Piper Chapman, a privileged New Yorker ends up in a women’s prison when a past crime catches up with her. The most recent 6th season saw some major changes, as the gang were moved from the (relative) comfort of the minimum security prison women’s prison to the harsher maximum security facility following Season 5’s riot. Groups were separated and pitched against each other. New alliances were formed, and new friendships, and enemies, made as the ladies discovered how to fit into their new reality.

All 6 Seasons of ‘Orange Is the New Black‘ can be watched on Netflix worldwide.
