‘The Middle’ Sue Heck Spin-Off Series Not Moving Forward

A few months ago, news arrived of a possible spin-off to ‘The Middle’, giving the character of Sue Heck her own show. ABC has now decided not to move forward on the project.

Titled ‘Sue Sue in the City’, the spinoff would have seen Eden Sher return to the role of twentysomething eternal optimist Sue Heck as she left the small town of Orson to navigate the ups and downs of a career and young adulthood in the big city of Chicago. The show was to be a single camera, half-hour comedy, written by ‘The Middle’ creators Eileen Heisler and DeAnn Heline with Warner Bros TV as the studio.

Although ABC has opted not to pick up the series, WBTV is talking about possibly shopping it around to other networks. Whilst not impossible someone might decide to take it, such as ABC sister-station Freeform, I would say chances are slim.

The main series came to an end back in May in the US after the show creators decided 9 seasons was a good place to finish. Although they haven’t totally ruled out a comeback at some point. “Our ratings have been great and ABC was very clear they did want more seasons – it was our decision to bring it to a close,” commented co-creator Eileen Heisler. “And hey… I can’t tell you what’s next… gotta save it for the reboot. See you in 10 years!”

‘The Middle’ aired on Comedy Central in the UK.
