BBC Confirmed New Years Day Premiere For ‘Luther’ Season 5

by Dave Elliott

As many of you may have suspected, the BBC has now confirmed New Year’s Day will not only see the seasonal episode of ‘Doctor Who’, but will also mark the premiere of Luther‘ Season 5.

When the moonless shadows of London give birth to a new nightmare, DCI John Luther must once again confront the depths of human depravity. As a series of monstrous killings becomes ever more audacious, Luther and new recruit D.S. Catherine Halliday are confounded by a tangle of leads and misdirection that seems designed to protect an unspeakable horror.

But even as the case brings him closer than ever to the nature of true evil, a reluctant Luther must also face the ghosts of his own past. Striding back into the line of fire, he must choose who to protect… and who to sacrifice. Whatever his next move, it will have devastating consequences for those around him – and will change John Luther forever.

The drama sees Idris Elba return as DCI John Luther, along with Dermot Crowley as Detective Superintendent Martin Schenk, Michael Smiley as Benny Silver and Patrick Malahide as George Cornelius. New cast this year include Wunmi Mosaku (‘The End of the F***ing World’, ‘Guerrilla’) as Detective Sergeant Catherine Halliday and Hermione Norris (‘Cold Feet’, ‘Spooks’) as Dr Vivien Lake. We will also have the return of another popular character from Luther’s past…

Luther‘ Season 5 premieres New Year’s Day (Tuesday, 1st January 2019), 9pm on BBC One.
