Geektown Awards – Most Anticipated TV Series, Game & Movie Of 2019

And so we come to the final categories. The Most Anticipated TV Series, Game & Movie Of 2019. This was an interesting one, as it’s a ‘Star Wars’ year, so we’d usually expect that to take the top spot in the Movie category… Not this time, however, it was a different story on the gaming side. Over on TV, it was incredibly close, with only 1% separating the top three shows. Here is the entertainment you are most looking forward to in the next 12 months.

The Most Anticipated TV Series Of 2019

Nominees: Deadly Class (based on the comic books), Good Omens (based on the book), Snowpiercer (based on the comic books), The Boys (based on the comic books), The Mandalorian (Star Wars), The Umbrella Academy (based on the comic books), The Witcher (based on the books and game), Titans (DC comic book show), Watchmen (based on the comic books)

Bronze: The Mandalorian

Silver: Titans

And the Gold goes to …

Winner: Watchmen

As I said in the opening, this category was incredibly close, with only a few votes separating the top three spots, however, it was HBO’s upcoming ‘Watchmen’ adaptation which took the crown.

Based on Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ seminal graphic novel, the series is set in an alternate reality where superheroes exist but are treated as outlaws. The drama will not be a direct adaptation of the comic books, but a “remixed” version. As Lindelof describes it as a new original story that will “vibrate with the seismic unpredictability of its own tectonic plates”, with the original twelve issues of the comic being “our Old Testament.” HBO has said it “embraces the nostalgia of the original groundbreaking graphic novel while attempting to break new ground of its own.”

We don’t really know any more than that regarding plot or characters, however, we do know some of the cast. They include Tom Mison (‘Sleepy Hollow’), Jean Smart (‘Legion’), Jeremy Irons (‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’), Regina King (‘The Leftovers’), Don Johnson (‘Miami Vice’), Tim Blake Nelson (‘O Brother, Where Art Thou?’), Louis Gossett Jr. (‘Hap and Leonard’, ‘An Officer and a Gentleman’), Adelaide Clemens (‘Rectify’) Frances Fisher (‘Masters of Sex’), Jacob Ming-Trent (‘SuperFly’) and Andrew Howard (‘Hell on Wheels’).

As Watchmen is a HBO series, it falls under Sky’s overall deal with the US network, so it should come to Sky Atlantic in 2019.

The Most Anticipated Game Of 2019

Nominees: Anthem, Days Gone, Devil May Cry 5, Dying Light 2, Kingdom Hearts III, Psychonauts 2, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, Tom Clancy’s The Division 2

Bronze: Kingdom Hearts III

Silver: Tom Clancy’s The Division 2

And the Gold goes to …

Winner: Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order

2019 looks to be another great year for gaming, with a huge array of new titles and sequels due to land. So it’s rather surprising that the title which takes the top spot is the one we know the least about… Or it would be if it wasn’t ‘Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order’.

The new game comes from Respawn Entertainment and is a brand-new action adventure which tells an original Star Wars story around Cal, a surviving Padawan set shortly after the events of ‘Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith’. Respawn are the people responsible for the multi-award-winning ‘Titanfall’ series, and was founded by Jason West and Vince Zampella, the people behind the original ‘Call Of Duty’ games.

We know the new game will be dark in tone and will be a singleplayer experience. It stars a Padawan, so there will be lightsabers. That’s about it at the moment, but I’m sure we’ll find out more throughout the year, as ‘Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order’ is due to be released in time for Christmas 2019.

The Most Anticipated Movie Of 2019

Nominees: Avengers: Infinity War 2, Captain Marvel, Spider-Man: Far From Home, Star Wars: Episode XI, The Lion King, Toy Story 4

Bronze: Star Wars: Episode XI

Silver: Toy Story 4

And the Gold goes to …

Winner: Avengers: End Game

Disney’s license to print money looks set to continue into 2019, as Marvel’s ‘Avengers: End Game’ takes the top spot for Most Anticipated Movie Of 2019.

The last movie did not end well for The Avengers. After battling Thanos, the team failed to stop him from using the Infinity Gauntlet to “snap” half for the universe’s population out of existence. Tony Stark is left floating in space. Half the team is gone. Those left behind are struggling to decide what they do next.

When we posted the Awards this year, the movie didn’t even have a name or trailer, but now we have both. We now know that Jeremy Renner will be returning as Clint Barton along with Paul Rudd as Ant-man. We also see Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark / Iron Man, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner / Hulk, Chris Evans as Steve Rogers / Captain America, and Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff / Black Widow. Additionally, you can also be pretty sure Brie Larson will appear as Carol Danvers / Captain Marvel, Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa / Black Panther and Tom Holland as Peter Parker / Spider-Man. Everyone else is anyone’s guess.

‘Avengers: End Game’ lands in UK cinemas in April 2019.

So that’s it for The Geektown Awards for another year. Hope you all have a fantastic 2019, and we look forward to seeing you on the site, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. Here’s to an entertainment packed 12 months!
