USA Network has released the first trailer for Pearson, the upcoming spin-off series to ‘Suits’ starring Gina Torres.

‘Pearson’ sees Torres reprise her role as Jessica Pearson, the hard-as-nails former managing partner of Pearson Specter Litt. Now living in Chicago, she finds herself embroiled in the dirty world of Chicago politics, and must rely on her legal wits to help her navigate these new waters.

The show was first aired as a “backdoor pilot” during the ‘Suits’ Season 7 finale. ‘Pearson’ will see Morgan Spector (‘Homeland’) reprise his role from that finale as Mayor Bobby Golec, along with Simon Kassianides (‘Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’) who played Nick D’Amato, a cop who is the Mayor’s driver but also has connections to a big Chicago developer. They are joined by Bethany Joy Lenz (‘One Tree Hill’) as an ambitious lawyer and Mayor’s unofficial right hand, Keri Allen – the role was played by Rebecca Rittenhouse in the pilot. Chantel Riley (‘Wynnona Earp’) also joins the cast as Jessica’s cousin Angela, along with Isabel Arraiza (‘The Oath’) as Jessica’s rather intense assistant Yoli, and Eli Goree (‘Ballers’) as the mayor’s press secretary, Derrick. You may also spot D.B. Woodside in the trailer above, who reprises his role as Jessica’s boyfriend, Jeff Malone.

Tonally, ‘Pearson’ seems a little darker than ‘Suits’. “It has Suits DNA but we wanted the show’s concept to be grittier, raw, more real, showing more facets of her [Jessica’s] personality and life,” commented exec producer Daniel Arkin at yesterday’s TCA panel. “We are seeing her behind the ball, not knowing everything,” adds creator and exec producer Aaron Korsh about the new series. “People reject her for a change.”

It was announced last week that ‘Suits’ would come to an end with a 10-episode final 9th Season later this year. Whilst we may see some of those characters pop up in ‘Pearson’, the producers have said they won’t move anyone over wholesale, at least not in the 1st Season, as they want the show to stand on it’s own. On the final season of ‘Suits’, they are hoping to have a few old faces pop up, however, they also added the likelyhood of the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, making an appearance are “pretty close to zero.”

‘Suits’ Season 8 is currently airing on Netflix in the UK. There is no news on a UK broadcaster for Pearson‘ Season 1 yet, but we’ll let you know when we hear something.
