Amazon Sets May Premiere Date For ‘Good Omens’ (Oh… And Cumberbatch Is Playing Satan!)

by Dave Elliott

Amazon has released some more information about their much anticipated adaptation of Terry Pratchett & Neil Gaiman’s Good Omens. Most importantly, the release date which is the 31st May 2019, but also a new video previewing the title sequence, and some casting news.

‘Good Omens‘ sees Michael Sheen star as the somewhat fussy angel and rare book dealer Aziraphale, and David Tennant plays his opposite number, the fast-living demon Crowley, both of whom have lived amongst Earth’s mortals since The Beginning and have grown rather fond of the lifestyle and of each other. So it’s really terrible news for both of them that, if Heaven and Hell have their way, the world will end on Saturday. Next Saturday, in fact. Just before dinner. The armies of Good and Evil are amassing, Atlantis has risen, tempers are flaring. The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse are ready to ride. Everything appears to be going according to the Divine Plan. Except that someone seems to have misplaced the Antichrist…

The cast list is already a ridiculous star-studded list, but they are adding one last name (clearly he didn’t want to be left out) – Benedict Cumberbatch, who will, of course, be playing Satan… A giant animated Satan, according to Gaiman. The Oscar-winning Frances McDormand (‘Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri’, ‘Fargo’) will play his opposite, the voice of God.

The rest of the ridiculously talented cast includes Jon Hamm as the Archangel Gabriel, Miranda Richardson as Madame Tracy, with Michael McKean as Shadwell, Jack Whitehall as Newt, Adria Arjona as Anathema Device, Anna Maxwell Martin as Beelzebub, Mark Gatiss & Steve Pemberton as Harmony & Glozier, Derek Jacobi as the Metatron, and David Morrissey as pleasure cruiser Morbilli Captain Vincent.

The equal parts comedy and horror, the series is written by Neil Gaiman (‘American Gods’), who also serves as showrunner, and directed by Douglas Mackinnon (‘Sherlock’, ‘Line Of Duty’, ‘Doctor Who’). It is based on the well-loved and internationally bestselling novel ‘Good Omens’ by Terry Pratchett (‘Hogfather’) and Gaiman.

Good Omens‘ premieres worldwide on Friday, 31st May 2019 on Amazon Prime.
