The ‘Jane the Virgin’ spin-off ‘Jane the Novela’ has added ‘Desperate Housewives’ star Marcia Cross to the show as it ramps up casting on the pilot.

The premise for the new show is an telenovela-inspired anthology format, with each season based on a different fictional novel “written by” Jane Villanueva (Gina Rodriguez) and narrated by the author. Season 1 is set in a Napa Valley vineyard, where family secrets (and family members) don’t stay buried for long.

Jacqueline Grace Lopez (‘General Hospital’, ‘East Los High’) stars as Estela, an up-and-coming art curator who has spent years playing it safe and colouring within the lines. But a shocking secret changes everything and forces her to live a double life. She finds herself torn between her boyfriend, Luen, who is the winery’s head of security, and Felix, the handsome winery owner. Felix co-owns the business with his manipulative and glamorous mother Renata (Cross), who will stop at nothing to secure her son’s legacy… even if it means standing in the way of his happiness.

Since starring as Bree in the smash-hit ‘Desperate Housewives’, Cross has appeared in the mini-series ‘Youth & Consequences’ along with starring as the manipulative Claire Haas in ‘Quantico’. In September 2018 she revealed that she had been battling cancer, but it was thankfully now in remission.

‘Jane the Novela’ comes from ‘Jane the Virgin’ creator/executive producer Jennie Snyder Urman, and is currently only at the pilot stage, so may not make it to series. We’ll let you know when we hear more.
