Star Wars Episode IX Has A Name ‘The Rise Of Skywalker’, A Trailer, And The Return Of An Old Evil…

by Dave Elliott

Today at the launch of Star Wars Celebration, the cast of the new Star Wars movie came out on stage to talk about the film, and also dropped the name, a few bits of news, a new trailer, and the surprising return of an old evil…

The last movie in the Skywalker Saga will officially (and appropriately) be called ‘Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker’. The trailer, which you can see above, features some amazing shots. Rey taking on a Tie Fighter with only a lightsaber… Those of you with an eye for detail will notice, that is the Skywalker lightsaber she is holding, which was previously ripped apart.

We also get our first look at Billy Dee Williams back in costume as Lando Calrissian. Kylo Ren cutting his way through some people. BB-8 gets a new friend called “Dio” (although I suspect it’s probably spelt something like DI-0). As the trailer says “no one is ever really gone…” Then… that laugh… that terrible laugh…

It’s the return of Palpatine… aka Darth Sidious.

Whilst we don’t know much of the plot at this point, it will feature “an epic adventure the group goes on together” according to director JJ Abrams. It also picks up “some time” after the events of the last movie. It would seem that one place that adventure will take them is to the wreckage of the Death Star, judging by the trailer, although for what reason we don’t know. Possibly something to do with Palpatine’s return?

There were a couple of other more comical points to come out of the panel. Host Stephen Colbert asked John Boyega about the potential return of Captain Phasma, to which Boyega replied “No, she dead… she dead!” Colbert followed that up by asking if Finn could take Brienne of Tarth in a fight, to which Boyega replied by looking at the floor and shaking his head no.

Sorry to disappoint Adam Driver fans, but Daisy Ridley confirmed there were “no more semi-naked Kylo’s” in this film… At which point JJ chimed in joking “Only full. Only fully naked!”

When asked, “Who is a better pilot? Poe or Han Solo?” Oscar Isaac responded “Well, no one can pilot the Millennium Force like Han… But Poe can literally fly anything… Poe is the better Uber driver.”

There is also the question of why is the film called ‘The Rise Of Skywalker’… Luke is dead (and presumably a force ghost). Leia is alive, but it’s not likely to be her they are talking about. Could Kylo switch sides, as he is technically half Skywalker? Could it be Rey, which seems possible, although maybe a bit obvious? Could it be someone else?… But it seems a little late to introduce someone new to pick up the mantle. So many questions!

‘Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker’ premieres in UK cinemas on 19th, December 2019… and it can’t come soon enough!
