Netflix Cancels ‘Santa Clarita Diet’ After 3 Seasons

In some sad news, Netflix has opted to cancel Drew Barrymore and Timothy Olyphant series Santa Clarita Diet after 3 seasons it has been announced.

The show stars Barrymore and Olyphant as husband and wife realtor team Joel and Sheila. They are leading vaguely discontented lives in the L.A. suburb of Santa Clarita with their teenage daughter Abby (Liv Hewson). All is well until Sheila goes through a “dramatic change”, i.e. becomes a zombie, sending their lives down a road of death and destruction… but in a good way.

“The world had never known a ‘zom-com’ until Santa Clarita Diet, and we’re indebted to creator Victor Fresco for bringing this idea to Netflix,” the streaming service commented in a statement. “To their endless credit, the incredible Drew Barrymore and Timothy Olyphant were totally game, with an uncanny knack for comedy that brought Sheila and Joel Hammond to vibrant life, even though one of them was undead. We’re grateful to Victor, Drew, and Timothy, along with fellow executive producers Tracy Katsky, Aaron Kaplan, Chris Miller and Ember Truesdell and the terrific cast, including Liv Hewson and Skyler Gisondo, and crew for three hilarious seasons for Netflix members to discover for years to come.”

The move to cancel after 3 Season has become something of a trend for Netflix recently. It joins the recently cancelled Marvel/Netflix shows, ‘Travelers’, ‘Love’, ‘One Day At A Time’, and ‘Bloodline’. In fact, if you look at all the Netflix series, very few actually make it past 3 Seasons. Only series which have been huge hits, award-winners, or were brought with multi-season orders, such as ‘The Crown’ which was ordered for 6 Seasons straight out of the gate, have made it to Season 4 and beyond.

More frustratingly for fans, unlike normal tv network series, the contracts signed with Netflix and outside studio producers prevents them from moving their series to other networks for extended periods of time. For example, there has been some talk of the Marvel series moving to Disney+ or Hulu. However, Netflix has a 2-year exclusion on those shows, meaning Marvel can’t do anything with them for at least the next few years, despite Netflix being the ones that cancelled them.

Despite all this, star Timothy Olyphant has jokingly vowed to carry on regardless. “I loved working on this show. I’m going to continue coming in and doing scenes,” he joked. “If they don’t want to film it, that’s up to them.”

You can find Seasons 1 to 3 of ‘Santa Clarita Diet‘ on Netflix UK.
