Netflix Renews Mind-Bending Comedy ‘Russian Doll’ For Season 2

Netflix has handed a 2nd Season to Russian Doll, the mind-bending Groundhog Day-esque comedy from ‘Orange Is The New Black’ star Natasha Lyonne, Amy Poehler and Leslye Headland.

Season 1 of Russian Doll’ followed a young woman named Nadia (Lyonne) on her journey as the guest of honour at a seemingly inescapable party one night in New York City. Nadia is something of an anti-hero who finds that she is stuck in a loop. She is living the same night over and over again and can’t seem to get out of her own way. She’s troubled, but hopes she is one of the good guys.

Lyonne, who is best known for her role as Nicky in the brilliant ‘Orange Is The New Black’, is joined by Greta Lee (‘KTown’) who plays Maxine, Nadia’s best friend and a very successful media artist. She’s frenetic, vulnerable and fiercely loyal to Nadia. Yul Vazquez (‘Captain Phillips’) plays John, Nadia’s on-again-off-again boyfriend. He’s a true adult and a genuinely nice guy. Tony Award-winner Elizabeth Ashley (‘Ocean’s 8’) stars as Ruth, the closest thing Nadia has to family, can look directly into your soul. Lastly, Charlie Barnett (‘Chicago Fire’) stars as Alan (the guy in the elevator at the end of the trailer) who is seemingly having similar issues to Nadia. His biggest flaw is that he’ll go to the ends of the earth for the people he cares about.

The announcement came during an interview with Lyonne and Netflix content VP Cindy Holland at Recode’s annual Code Conference earlier today. The critically-acclaimed comedy will have 8 episodes for its 2nd Season, and is very likely to pop up on the Emmy nominations list when they are announced next month.

The series is co-created by Lyonne, Amy Poehler and Leslye Headland (‘Terriers’, ‘Bachelorette’), who all serve as executive producers, with Headland and Lyonne as writers for the series. Production comes from Universal Television, Poehler’s Paper Kite Productions, JAX Media and 3 Arts Entertainment. It’s interesting to note that the series features an all-female writing and directing team, with episodes directed by Jamie Babbit (‘Silicon Valley’, ‘Girls’), Headland, and Lyonne.

You can find ‘Russian Doll‘ Season 1 on Netflix right now.
