First Plot Details & Premiere Date Emerge For 8th & Final Season Of ‘Homeland’

Showtime has released the first plot details of the 8th & final Season of Homeland, along with the US air date (no confirmed UK date yet, but it usually airs not long after the US).

‘Homeland’ stars Claire Danes as bipolar ex-CIA officer Carrie Mathison who, with the help of her long-time mentor and former boss Saul Berenson (Mandy Patinkin), fearlessly risks everything, including her personal well-being and even sanity, at every turn in an effort to keep her country safe.

The final season of Homeland finds Carrie recovering from months of brutal confinement in a Russian gulag. Her body is healing, but her memory remains fractured – which is a problem for Saul, now National Security Advisor to the newly ascendant President Warner (Beau Bridges). The top priority of Warner’s young administration is an end to the “forever war” in Afghanistan, and Saul has been dispatched to engage the Taliban in peace negotiations. But Kabul teems with warlords and mercenaries, zealots and spies – and Saul needs the relationships and expertise that only his protégé can provide. Against medical advice, Saul asks Carrie to walk with him into the lion’s den – one last time.

Alongside Danes and Patinkin, the final season will see a bunch for familiar faces returning including Maury Sterling as Max; Linus Roache as David Wellington, who was White House Chief of Staff to President Keane; Costa Ronin as Russian Yevgeny Gromov; Nimrat Kaur as ISI Agent Tasneem Qureshi; And Numan Acar as terrorist Haissam Haqqani.

Now for the bad news… The series was originally supposed to air in June this year, then got bumped to Autumn (or “Fall” for the Americans reading this) 2019. Now, the premiere has been bumped back again to February 2020, although they have actually set an exact date this time so it should stick. “Homeland is an ambitious series – especially in its final season,” explained Showtime’s president of entertainment Gary Levine today at the TCA press tour. “Alex [Gansa – Showrunner] wants to go out proudly, and that has involved production in multiple countries at times and in places that have some issues. It just takes time. There have been no missteps, it’s been a relatively smooth process. But it’s a very ambitious production schedule and it has taken more time than we anticipated.”

Homeland‘ Season 8 premieres Sunday, February 9, 2020, at 9pm on Showtime in the US. Channel 4, who air the drama in the UK, won’t give out a date this far in advance, but it is usually not too long after the US, so we’d expect it sometime in Early 2020. We’ll update you when we have something official.
