‘The Umbrella Academy’ Adds Yusuf Gatewood, Marin Ireland & Ritu Arya To Season 2

The Umbrella Academy are getting some new classmates when the show returns for Season 2, as Netflix announces Yusuf Gatewood (‘The Originals’), Marin Ireland (‘Sneaky Pete’) and Ritu Arya (‘Humans’) will be joining the series.

The wonderfully weird family superhero drama is based in a reality where, on the same day in 1989, forty-three infants are inexplicably born to random, unconnected women who showed no signs of pregnancy the day before. Seven are adopted by a billionaire who creates The Umbrella Academy and prepares his “children” to save the world. Season 1 saw the six surviving members reunite upon the news of their father’s passing and having to work as a team once more to solve a mystery surrounding his death. But the estranged family begins to come apart due to their divergent personalities and abilities, not to mention the imminent threat of a global apocalypse.

Yusuf Gatewood is set to play Raymond, a born leader with the smarts, gravitas, and the confidence to never have to prove it to anyone. He is warm, dedicated and has the innate ability to disarm you with a look. A devoted husband, he’s the kind of guy everyone wants to know. Gatewood is no stranger to dealing with beings with abilities, having spend 5 Seasons on ‘The Originals’ as the witch Vincent. More recently, he popped up as Famine in Amazon’s brilliant ‘Good Omens’ adaptation.

Marin Ireland stars as Sissy, a fearless, no-nonsense Texas mom who married young for all the wrong reasons. Still in her prime, she’s eager to rediscover what life and love has to offer. Ireland has just come off the back of 3 Seasons playing the long-suffering Julia in Amazon’s ‘Sneaky Pete’. She is next due to appear in another comic book adaptation, the FX drama ‘Y’, based on Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra’s ‘Y: The Last Man’.

Ritu Arya portrays Lila, a chameleon who can be as brilliant or as clinically insane as the situation requires. Unpredictable, mischievous and sarcastic, Lila’s gifted with a twisted sense of humour. Arya is probably best known to our readers as the synth Flash from Channel 4 drama ‘Humans’. She also appeared as Dr. Megan Sharma in BBC daytime soap ‘Doctors’.

They will join the returning cast of Ellen Page as Vanya, Tom Hopper as Luther (aka Spaceboy), Emmy Raver-Lampman as Allison (aka The Rumor), Robert Sheehan as Klaus (aka The Séance), David Castañeda as Diego (aka The Kraken), Aidan Gallagher as Number Five (aka The Boy) and Justin H. Min as Ben (aka Number Six).

The Umbrella Academy’ is based on the comic book series created and written by Gerard Way, illustrated by Gabriel Bá, and published by Dark Horse Comics. The show is produced by Universal Cable Productions. Netflix has given a Season 2 order of 10 one-hour episodes, which will see Steve Blackman (‘Fargo’, ‘Altered Carbon’) return as Showrunner and Executive Producer. Executive Producers also set to return alongside Blackman include Jeff F. King (EP), Mike Richardson (EP), Keith Goldberg (EP), Gerard Way (Co-EP), and Gabriel Bá (Co-EP).

Earlier this year, we had the opportunity to chat with stars Emmy Raver-Lampman and Tom Hopper at this year’s MCM Birmingham Comic Con, where they talk about working on the show and filming Season 1. You can find that video below, or on our YouTube channel with lots of other video interviews.

If you missed The Umbrella Academy‘ Season 1go and watch it on Netflix right now. You really must, it’s brilliant. No news on a premiere date yet for Season 2, but we would expect it later in 2020. We’ll let you know when we have more.
