Liv Tyler Joins Rob Lowe In ‘9-1-1: Lonestar’ “Spin-Off” Series

Fox has found Rob Lowe’s partner in solving crime, as Liv Tyler signs on the ‘9-1-1’ “spin-off” series 9-1-1: Lonestar.

The drama comes from the ‘9-1-1’ creative team of Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Tim Minear, and stars Lowe as Owen, a sophisticated New York cop who, along with his son, re-locates to Austin Texas, and must try to balance saving those who are at their most vulnerable with solving the problems in his own life.

Tyler is set to star as Chief Paramedic Michelle Blake, who is described as “a little rock-n-roll, sometimes a bad girl, but always boss”. Equal parts compassionate and ruthless, Michelle is brilliant and wry, and the only one who can match wits with Owen in the station… where she will often put Owen in his place. While always on point at work, Michelle has an obsession she struggles to control: finding out what happened to her little sister Iris, who disappeared two years ago. She’ll stop at nothing to discover the truth, even if it means burning her own life down.

Most recently, Tyler has been starring in ‘Harlots’ as Lady Fitzwilliam, and prior to that, had a lead role as Meg in HBO series ‘The Leftovers’. She is, of course, well known for her part as Arwen in the ‘Lord Of The Rings’ trilogy, and starring opposite Ben Affleck and Bruce Willis in action movie ‘Armageddon’.

“The beauty of having a hit drama like 9-1-1 from the genius minds of Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Tim Minear is it allows you to explore thrilling stories as told through an array of distinctive characters,” commented Fox Entertainment President Michael Thorn when the series was announced. “In 9-1-1: Lone Star, they’ve given us a special opportunity to expand the franchise into new territory – literally and figuratively – and we’re thrilled to have the incomparable Rob Lowe headline this new iteration when it joins our schedule next season.”

Whilst this is described as a “spin-off” series, we have yet to see any sign of these characters appearing on the main ‘9-1-1’ show, which is based in California not Texas. That may change over the next season, or it could be that it just has a similar sensibility to the main series, much like the many ‘CSI’ “spin-offs”, and there won’t actually be any direct cross between the shows (at least initially). We will have to wait and see.

9-1-1: Lonestar‘ Season 1 premieres January 19, 2020 on Fox in the US. No news on a UK broadcaster yet, but we’ll let you know when we hear something.
