‘Death in Paradise’ Release Tease Of The New DI Coming In Season 9

Last week it was announced that Ardal O’Hanlon would be leaving his role as D.I. Jack Mooney in sun-soaked detective drama Death in Paradise when the series returns in January 2020. Now, the show has released a little tease of his replacement, which features the character sat on a hammock overlooking the sea. But who is he?…

At the moment, all we have to go on is that picture showing the back of his head. Looking through the Twitter this morning, fans have some wide-ranging suggestions, from Stephen Tomkinson to Chris Barrie to Christopher Eccleston or Alexander Armstrong. As great as those people would be, we’re not convinced by any of those answers… Someone did suggest Matthew Horne, Marcus Brigstocke or Ralf Little which seem closer to the mark, but we’ll have to wait to see. His identity will be “revealed soon”.

This is not the first time there has been a change of leadership for the Caribbean police unit. Ben Miller starred as D.I. Richard Poole for the first few seasons, and was then followed by Kris Marshall as D.I. Humphrey Goodman up to Season 6. Ardal O’Hanlon’s D.I. Jack Mooney will depart at some point in Season 9, but viewers will need to tune in to see exactly how and why he leaves.

Since launching in 2011, ‘Death in Paradise’ remains one of television’s highest-rating dramas with series eight pulling in an average of over seven million consolidated viewers. Produced by Red Planet Pictures and filmed on the beautiful French-Caribbean island of Guadeloupe, the award-winning drama will continue to keep audiences guessing with mind-boggling puzzles, cunningly clever plot twists and a star-studded array of guest cast.

The ninth series is commissioned for BBC One by Charlotte Moore, Director of Content, and Piers Wenger, Controller of Drama Commissioning and executive produced by Tim Key for Red Planet Pictures, Tommy Bulfin for the BBC and produced by Ella Kelly.

A 10th Season of ‘Death in Paradise’ has already been commissioned for BBC One. Tim Key will continue to executive produce for Red Planet Pictures and Tommy Bulfin for the BBC. ‘Death in Paradise’ is a Red Planet Pictures production, produced with the support of the region of Guadeloupe.

Death in Paradise‘ Season 9 premieres January 2020 on BBC One.
