Latest Trailer For Sky Atlantic’s ‘The New Pope’ Intros John Malkovich, Coming January 2020

by Dave Elliott

Sky Atlantic has released a new trailer for The New Pope’, which mainly focuses on John Malkovich’s character who appears to be taking the titular role. They have also said that the drama will land in January 2020.

As you can see in the trailer, the drama picks up after the events of ‘The Young Pope’, which saw Jude Law as Lenny Belardo, aka Pius XIII, the first American Pope in history.

WARNING SPOILERS FOR ‘THE YOUNG POPE’ BELOW:

It would seem that after Pius XIII collapsed at the end of ‘The Young Pope’, he has been in a coma, and it is believed will not wake up. The Vatican has elected a new pope, played by Malkovich. In the trailer, he describes himself as “irresponsible”, “indolent”, and “pompous”. When it comes to the question of what happens if Pius XIII does awaken, he responds “It doesn’t matter… I am the Pope…” at which point we see Lenny remove his gas mask and give that trademark smirk… This isn’t going to end well for one of them.

All nine episodes of ‘The New Pope’ are directed by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Paolo Sorrentino. The limited series is written by Sorrentino with Umberto Contarello and Stefano Bises, and marks Sorrentino’s second limited series set in the world of the modern papacy.

The cast features two-time Academy Award nominees Jude Law and John Malkovich. Returning cast from ‘The Young Pope’ includes Silvio Orlando, Javier Cámara, Cécile de France, Ludivine Sagnier and Maurizio Lombardi. The new cast for the limited series are Henry Goodman, Ulrich Thomsen, Mark Ivanir, Yuliya Snigir and Massimo Ghini. Sharon Stone and Marilyn Manson guest star.

The New Pope’ will debut in January 2020 on Sky Atlantic and NOW TV.
