Lin-Manuel Miranda’s upcoming directorial debut, a film adaptation of Jonathan Larson’s musical ‘tick, tick…BOOM!’, has added Joshua Henry, Bradley Whitford and Judith Light to the cast it has been announced.

Set in 1990, ‘tick, tick…BOOM!’ tells the story of Jon (Andrew Garfield – ‘Hacksaw Ridge’, ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’), an aspiring theatre composer who is waiting tables in New York City while writing Superbia – which he hopes will be the next great American musical and finally give him his big break. Jon is also feeling pressure from his girlfriend Susan (Vanessa Hudgens – ‘High School Musical’), who is tired of continuing to put her life on hold for Jon’s career aspirations. Meanwhile, his best friend and roommate Michael (Tony Award-nominated Robin de Jesus), has given up on his creative aspirations for a high paying advertising job on Madison Avenue and is about to move out. As Jon approaches his 30th birthday, he is overcome with anxiety – wondering if his dream is worth the cost.

The new cast members include 3-time Tony nominee Joshua Henry (‘See’) who joins as Roger, Emmy Award Winner Bradley Whitford (‘The Handmaid’s Tale’, ‘Perfect Harmony’) who plays Stephen Sondheim, and Emmy and Tony Award Winner Judith Light (‘The Politician’, ‘Transparent’) as Rosa Stevens. They join the previously announced cast of Garfield, Hudgens, Robin de Jesus, and Alexandra Shipp (‘Straight Outta Compton’, ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’).

The film is written by Tony Award winner Steven Levenson (‘Dear Evan Hansen’, ‘Fosse/Verdon’) who is adapting the screenplay based on the original stage show by the late Rent creator Jonathan Larson. Lin-Manuel Miranda, who has previously starred in stage productions of the show, makes his film directorial debut on the project. Two-time Grammy nominee Ryan Heffington provides the choreography. Miranda also exec produces, alongside Brian Grazer, Ron Howard and Julie Oh for Imagine Entertainment.

No news yet on when the film ‘tick, tick…BOOM!’ will air, but it will come to Netflix. We’ll let you know when we hear more.
