A ‘National Treasure’ TV Series Is In The Works For Disney+, Along With A 3rd Movie

It’s a time of international crisis, so who do you call? Nic Cage of course! News has landed this week that not only is there a third ‘National Treasure’ movie in the works, but Disney is also looking to create a tv series based on the franchise for streaming service Disney+.

For the uninitiated, the ‘National Treasure’ films star Nic Cage as Benjamin Franklin Gates, a historian and amateur cryptologist who spends the first film searching for a family legend of a fantastic treasure trove of artefacts and gold, hidden by the Founding Fathers of the United States. Part of the plot involves the suggestion that the steal the Declaration of Independence, leading to the birth of a host of memes online. The second movie, ‘Book of Secrets’, follows Ben as he tries to clear the name of his ancestor who had been implicated in the assassination of Abraham Lincoln.

In an interview with Collider, legendary Hollywood producer Jerry Bruckheimer revealed that, not only was the third film very much in development, but they were also working on a tv series too. “We’re certainly working on one [National Treasure] for streaming and we’re working on one for the big screen,” he commented. “Hopefully, they’ll both come together and we’ll bring you another National Treasure, but they’re both very active… The one for Disney+ is a much younger cast. It’s the same concept but a young cast. The one for theatrical would be the same cast.”

It had previously been announced that ‘Bad Boys For Life’ writer Chris Bremner had been tapped to pen the script for ‘National Treasure 3’, and according to Bruckheimer, “The film version is being written right now.” He goes on to add that “The television version is in process. We have a pilot script done, and an outline of the future episodes.”

So it seems they are well on their way to developing the tv series, albeit with a younger cast rather than the original people. It’ll be interesting to see whether that is a prequel, with someone cast as a young Benjamin Franklin Gates, or possibly following the kids of Nic Cage’s character. Either way, it would be great if Cage is involved in some way, even if it’s only for a cameo. We’ll let you know when we hear something more official.
