School is back in, as Netflix announces a July premiere date for The Umbrella Academy‘ Season 2, along with a fabulous video, all shot in the homes of the cast to reveal the date.

The wonderfully weird family superhero drama is based in a reality where, on the same day in 1989, forty-three infants are inexplicably born to random, unconnected women who showed no signs of pregnancy the day before. Seven are adopted by a billionaire who creates The Umbrella Academy and prepares his “children” to save the world. Season 1 saw the six surviving members reunite upon the news of their father’s passing and having to work as a team once more to solve a mystery surrounding his death. But the estranged family begins to come apart due to their divergent personalities and abilities, not to mention the imminent threat of a global apocalypse.

The series stars Ellen Page as Vanya, Tom Hopper as Luther (aka Spaceboy), Emmy Raver-Lampman as Allison (aka The Rumor), Robert Sheehan as Klaus (aka The Séance), David Castañeda as Diego (aka The Kraken), Aidan Gallagher as Number Five (aka The Boy) and Justin H. Min as Ben (aka Number Six).

Season 2 will see them joined by some new faces, as Yusuf Gatewood (‘The Originals’) take the role of Raymond, a born leader with the smarts, gravitas, and the confidence to never have to prove it to anyone; Marin Ireland (‘Sneaky Pete’) plays Sissy, a fearless, no-nonsense Texas mom who married young for all the wrong reasons; And Ritu Arya (‘Humans’) portrays Lila, a chameleon who can be as brilliant or as clinically insane as the situation requires.

In the announcement video, the gang recreate the somewhat iconic moment from Season 1 where they dance along to Tiffany’s ‘I Think We’re Alone Now’, albeit from the responsible social distance of their own homes.

The Umbrella Academy’ is based on the comic book series created and written by Gerard Way, illustrated by Gabriel Bá, and published by Dark Horse Comics. The show is produced by Universal Cable Productions. Netflix has given a Season 2 order of 10 one-hour episodes, which will see Steve Blackman (‘Fargo’, ‘Altered Carbon’) return as Showrunner and Executive Producer. Executive Producers also set to return alongside Blackman include Jeff F. King (EP), Mike Richardson (EP), Keith Goldberg (EP), Gerard Way (Co-EP), and Gabriel Bá (Co-EP).

The Umbrella Academy‘ Season 2 premieres Friday, 31st July 2020 on Netflix UK and worldwide.
