NBC Renews ‘Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist’ For Season 2

NBC has renewed the utterly brilliant musical dramedy series Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist for Season 2 the US broadcaster has announced.

‘Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist’ stars Jane Levy (‘Suburgatory’) as Zoey Clarke, a whip-smart computer coder forging her way in San Francisco. After an unusual event, she starts to hear the innermost wants and desires of the people around her through songs. At first, she questions her own sanity but soon realises this unwanted curse may just be an incredibly wonderful gift (which also gives them an excuse for big musical numbers!)

Alongside Levy, the series stars Skylar Astin (‘Pitch Perfect’), Alex Newell (‘Glee’), John Clarence Stewart (‘What/If’), Golden Globe winner Peter Gallagher (‘The O.C.’) and Oscar winner Mary Steenburgen (‘The Last Man on Earth’) along with special guest star Lauren Graham (‘Gilmore Girls’).

Whilst Zoey’s has only had middling ratings for its live numbers on NBC, it has been a huge hit via delayed & digital watching, along with catching a massive amount of social media buzz. Whilst the initial airing only scored a modest 0.7 rating and 3.1 million viewers in the critical 18-49 demographic, that bounces up to a substantial 3.3 rating and 7.9 million when you add in digital and delayed viewing.

“We were overwhelmed by the number of people who fell in love with Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist and how much joy it brought to everyone,” commented said Lisa Katz and Tracey Pakosta, Co-Presidents of Scripted Programming, NBC Entertainment. “We’re thrilled to bring it back and can’t wait to see how Zoey’s journey continues.”

The series is written and executive produced by Austin Winsberg (‘Jake In Progress’), alongside executive producers Paul Feig (Lionsgate’s ‘A Simple Favor’, ‘Bridesmaids’) via Feigco Entertainment, Jessie Henderson, Eric and Kim Tannenbaum (‘Two and a Half Men’) via The Tannenbaum Company, and Polygram’s David Blackman (‘Flatliners’) and Daniel Inkeles (‘It’s Complicated’). Emmy award-winning Richard Shepard (‘Ugly Betty’) directed and executive produced the pilot. The series is produced by Lionsgate and Universal Television in association with the Tannenbaum Company, Feigco Entertainment and Universal Music Group.

If you haven’t picked up this series yet, we would strongly suggest you watch. It’s weird, hilarious, beautiful and heartbreaking, often all at the same time, and one of our favourite comedies of the year so far.

Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist Season 1 can be watched in the UK right now on All4, although it leaves the streaming service on 19th June 2020, so be quick!
