DC’s ‘Stargirl’ Renewed For Season 2 As Original CW Series

Stargirl has been renewed for a 2nd Season it has been announced in the US, but not by original broadcaster DC Universe. US network The CW, which had been sharing the series with DC Universe, will now be its sole home.

‘Stargirl’ follows high school sophomore Courtney Whitmore (Brec Bassinger – ‘School of Rock’) who inspires an unlikely group of young heroes to stop the villains of the past. This new DC Universe series reimagines Stargirl and the very first superhero team, the Justice Society of America, in a fun, exciting and unpredictable series.

The CW had been airing the superhero drama the day after it aired on DC Universe in the US, but it will now air exclusively on The CW from the 2nd Season. It does rather seem like DC Universe could be moving away from premiering live-action shows, as ‘Doom Patrol’ is already airing on HBO Max, leaving ‘Titans’ as their sole live-action series.

In the UK, this adds another potential spanner in the works… ‘Stargirl’ has yet to make a proper appearance in The CW’s Arrowverse (except for fleeting shots in the “Crisis” event), but it is a Berlanti produced show, so it is possible she could be folded into future crossovers. Whilst that’s all lovely for the American audience where everything is on a single network, in the UK, Amazon has the rights to ‘Stargirl’, whilst ‘Batwoman’ is currently on E4, and everything else is on Sky One… We shall have to wait and see if that becomes an issue moving forward.

Alongside Bassinger, Amy Smart (‘Crank’, ‘Varsity Blues’, ‘Road Trip’) plays Barbara Whitmore, mother of Courtney, who, now that her daughter is grown up, is jumping back into the workforce and striving to be the best mother and provider she can be to her daughter. Luke Wilson (‘Old School’) plays Pat Dugan, new husband to Barbara, who has a previous connection to the JSA…

Other cast includes Yvette Monreal (‘The Fosters’, ‘Legends of Tomorrow’), Anjelika Washington (‘Girls Room’), Cameron Gellman (‘Heathers’), Jake Austin Walker (‘Rectify’), Trae Romano (‘555’),  Meg DeLacy (‘The Fosters’), Christopher James Baker (‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’, ‘Ozark’) and Neil Jackson (‘Absentia’, ‘Sleepy Hollow’).

The series focuses on the character that started creator Geoff Johns’ career as a comic book writer when he created her in 1999, lovingly inspired by his late sister who was killed in a 1996 plane crash. Johns (‘Arrow’, ‘Batwoman’, ‘The Flash’, ‘Titans’) serves as showrunner and executive produces the series with Melissa Carter (‘Queen Sugar’), who serves as co-showrunner, as well as Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter. ‘Stargirl’ is produced by Berlanti Productions and Mad Ghost Productions in association with Warner Bros Television.

Stargirl‘ Season 1 premieres Friday 21st August 2020 on Amazon Prime UK.
