Amazon Announces Grime & Drill Musical Drama ‘Jungle’ & Nostalgic High School Dating Show…

Amazon has announced two new UK commissions today at wildly different ends of the spectrum! The first is ‘Jungle’, a musical drama series set in the “drill and grime” scene, and the second is a dating show which will take contestants to the nostalgic world of 80s, 90s and 00s American High School movies!

‘Jungle’ follows the connected lives of two separate strangers, each facing their own struggles, viewed through the prism of UK grime and drill music, and giving a perspective on often unseen worlds of inner-city London. Frequently misunderstood, it’s a world where one law governs everything: eat or be eaten. As the strangers’ worlds begin to unravel around them, they come to the realisation that every action, no matter how small, has a consequence.

Produced by Nothing Lost, the series will be told through a unique blend of music and dialogue, working alongside creatively ambitious cinematography and design to create a tilted, timeless version of today’s world and bring to life a compelling and complex narrative. The series will feature some of the UK’s top grime, drill and UK rap artists and looks to capture a very different side to an often-told story. Portraying the city through compelling visuals, whilst detailing the many twists and turns and double-crossing involved in day to day life on London’s streets and ultimately conveying a bigger message about the true value of life.

“We are incredibly excited to be working with Nothing Lost on this brilliantly fresh and unique UK Amazon Original series,” commented Georgia Brown, Director of European Amazon Originals for Prime Video. “Jungle will shine a light on the amazing creativity of the UK’s drill, grime and rap music scenes and hopefully empower a varied collection of British storytellers to create captivating content which reflects the diversity of the UK today.”

The 6 x 30-minute series will be produced by Nothing Lost. The executive producers are Junior Okoli and Chas Appeti. This is Nothing Lost’s first scripted series commission. Further details including casting and launch date will be announced in due course.

The second commission is an as-yet-untitled eight-part immersive reality dating show produced by Studio Lambert. Across the series, viewers will see a cast of unlucky-in-love Brits try to find “the one” by going back to High School for a second time. The participants won’t just be going ‘back to school’ but entering the nostalgic picture-perfect world of 80s, 90s and 00s American High School movies to complete a search for love. There will be no swiping, ghosting or battling catfish. This quest for romance will be explored through a High School movie fantasy world where a diverse group of singletons, including individuals from across the LGBTQ+ spectrum, will be falling in and out of love with one another in unexpected ways. From taking a seat at the cafeteria, to homecoming, to cheer try-outs, this series creates a perfect backdrop for finding friendship, flirting and falling in love, all building up to an epic season finale with one couple being crowned prom royalty…

“The idea of finding love in the melting pot of an American High School is a pop-cultural cornerstone,” said Tim Harcourt, Creative Director for Studio Lambert. “Every romantic singleton would love a chance to relive a cinematic version of their school days knowing what they know now and more importantly who they are now. Maybe this time the Jock might fall for the Captain of the Chess Club and the Cheerleader might fall for the Maths Geek.”

The series will be produced by Studio Lambert. The executive producer is Tim Harcourt (‘The Circle’, ‘Race Across the World’, ‘Tattoo Fixers’). Further details including casting and launch date will be announced in due course.
