The Fabulous ‘Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist’ Promotes 4 Cast To Series Regulars For Season 2

We’re still a little while of the return of the wonderful Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist for a 2nd Season, but some news has landed about which characters we’ll be seeing a bit more of when it is back.

‘Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist’ stars Jane Levy as Zoey Clarke, a whip-smart computer coder forging her way in San Francisco. After an unusual event, she starts to hear the innermost wants and desires of the people around her through songs. At first, she questions her own sanity but soon realises this unwanted curse may just be an incredibly wonderful gift.

Four of the previously recurring cast members have been promoted to series regulars for season two. They include Andrew Leeds and Alice Lee, who stars as Zoey’s older brother David and her sister-in-law Emily, along with Michael Thomas Grant and Kapil Talwalkar, who play Zoey’s SPRQ Point colleagues and “best bros”, Leif and Tobin.

They will join other returning series regulars which includes Levy as Zoey; Skylar Astin as Zoey’s bestie (and on/off love-interest) Max; Alex Newell as her vivacious genderfluid neighbour Mo; John Clarence Stewart as Simon, her SPRQ Point colleague and other love-interest; And Mary Steenburgen as Maggie, her mother.

Not returning for the second season is, of course, *SPOILER WARNING* Peter Gallagher, who played Mitch, Zoey’s father who succumbed to his progressive supranuclear palsy in the phenomenally emotional and heart-wrenching season one finale.

Lauren Graham, who plays Zoey’s SPRQ Point boss, Joan, will hopefully return for a number of episodes, but delays from the gobal pandemic have thrown a scheduling spanner in the works… Graham is set to lead the cast of Disney+’s Mighty Ducks reboot, where she plays a mom who builds her own ragtag team after her son is cut from the (now, hugely successful) Mighty Ducks. That would have been filmed prior to her returning on ‘Extraordinary Playlist’, but the pandemic shutdown has now moved the productions to a point where they may overlap. Hopefully, they can figure some something out if that happens.

As to what we may see from the newly “upped” cast, David is having to deal with losing his father while becoming a father for the first time, whilst his wife Emily is balancing the joys and pains of new motherhood while coping with a newly grieving family. Leif, the wide-eyed and seemingly sweet-natured programmer, suddenly finds himself in a new position at Sprq Point, whilst his colleague Tobin continues to use humour and insults to mask his deep inner complexity.

‘Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist’ is created by Austin Winsberg, and choreographed by Mandy Moore just won an Emmy for her Outstanding Choreography. The comedy was also nominated for a TCA Award for Outstanding New Program ealier this year. Lionsgate and Universal Television produce the series in association with the Tannenbaum Company, Feigco Entertainment, Universal Music Group’s Polygram Entertainment and Zihuatenejo Productions.

Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist‘ is due to return for Season 2 in “midseason” 2021 on NBC in the USA (although that will depend on when they can get back to filming). The series airs on E4 in the UK.
