Geektown BTS Podcast 36: Rich Newbold, Game Director ‘Jurassic World Evolution: Complete Edition’ Interview

This episode of the Geektown Behind The Scenes Podcast we feature Rich Newbold, Game Director on Jurassic World Evolution: Complete Edition from Frontier Developments, which has recently been released on Nintendo Switch.

For those of you that haven’t played ‘Jurassic World Evolution’, it is a building business management game which places you at the heart of the Jurassic franchise and lets you build your own Jurassic Parks! The game comes from Frontier Developments, who were also the people behind ‘Planet Coaster’, ‘Planet Zoo’ and the ‘RollerCoaster Tycoon’ games.

In the game, you take charge of operations on the legendary islands of The Cinco Muertes Archipelago and bring the wonder, majesty and danger of dinosaurs to life. You can build for science, entertainment or security interests in an uncertain world where life always finds a way. The system lets you bioengineer over 60 dinosaurs that think, feel and react intelligently to the world around them, allowing you to play with life itself to give your dinosaurs unique behaviours, traits and appearances, then contain and profit from them to fund your global search for lost dinosaur DNA.

In the interview, Rich discusses the challenges of bringing a game like ‘Jurassic World Evolution’ to the Switch, his favourite parts of the game, and what he might include if they were to make a ‘Jurassic World Evolution 2’. We also talk about working with the original cast of the movies who returned to voice their characters for the video game.

Jurassic World Evolution is available on PC, PS4, Xbox One, and now, Nintendo Switch.
