Netflix Renews Comic Book Horror/Mystery Series ‘Locke & Key’ For Season 3

In something of a rare move these days for Netflix, the streaming service has handed a 3rd Season order to horror/mystery series Locke & Key before the 2nd Season has even premiered.

Based on best-selling comic book series by Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez for IDW comics, the series the three Locke siblings and their mother who move into their ancestral home, Keyhouse, after the death of the father. Once there, they discover the house is full of magical keys that may be connected to their dad’s unfortunate demise. As the Locke children explore the different keys and their unique powers, a mysterious demon awakens – and will stop at nothing to steal them. The series is a coming-of-age mystery about love, loss, and the unshakable bonds that define family.

The news of the renewal lands as Meredith Averill (‘The Haunting of Hill House’), co-showrunner of the drama with Carlton Cuse, signs an overall deal with the streaming service, which seems to have been the catalyst for the early pickup. Production on the 2nd Season, which is due to air in 2021, wrapped up in Toronto this week, and the plan is to now continue straight into production on the 3rd Season in the new year.

“Carlton and Meredith have built an incredible world in Locke and Key and we’re excited to have the Lockes return for more in the third season,” commented Brian Wright VP of Overall Deals for Netflix. “I’m delighted to expand our creative partnership with Meredith Averill, a talented creator with a keen eye for best-in-class horror and supernatural storytelling.”

For a show which had a really difficult path to screen, the renewal is great news for fans were put through the wringer waiting for an adaptation to appear. This Netflix version was the third time the comic book has been tried as a tv series, with the first attempt at Fox in 2011, followed by a second attempt by Hulu in 2018.

The drama stars Darby Stanchfield (‘Scandal’) as mother Nina Locke, with Jackson Robert Scott (‘IT’ and ‘IT 2’) as Bode Locke, Connor Jessup (‘American Crime’) as Tyler Locke, and Emilia Jones (‘Horrible Histories’) as Kinsey Locke, the three children. Bill Heck (‘The Ballad of Buster Scruggs’) portrays the father, Rendell Locke, with Laysla De Oliveira as Dodge, Thomas Mitchell Barnet as Sam Lesser, Griffin Gluck (‘American Vandal’) as Gabe, and Coby Bird as Rufus Whedon.

‘Locke & Key’ is written by Joe Hill who co-created the origin comic book with Gabriel Rodriguez. Carlton Cuse (‘The Strain’, ‘Bates Motel’, ‘Colony’, ‘Lost’) and Meredith Averill serve as showrunners, and exec produce alongside Hill, Aron Eli Coleite, Chris Ryall with Lydia Antoni and Ted Adams for IDW, Lindsey Springer for Genre Arts, Andy Muschietti, Barbara Muschietti, David Alpert and Rick Jacobs for Circle of Confusion, Tim Southam, John Weber and Frank Siracusa for Take 5. The original comic book, published by IDW Publishing, garnered both awards and acclaim during its ten-year run. It has been translated into dozens of languages across the globe and has sold millions of copies worldwide.

Locke & Key‘ Season 1 can be binged on Netflix right now, and Season 2 will arrive in 2021.
