CW’s Live-Action ‘Powerpuff Girls’ Pilot Adds Donald Faison & Nicholas Podany

The CW’s ‘Powerpuff Girls’ live-action pilot has added two more names to its roster, as Donald Faison takes the role of Professor Utonium, with Nicholas Podany taking the part of Mojo Jojo (Jr.)

For the uninitiated, ‘The Powerpuff Girls‘ was an animated series, created by Craig McCracken, and followed the adventures of Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup. These three kindergarten-aged girls, with an array of superpowers, saved the world (or at least their city of Townsville) from monsters, would-be conquerers and a few other gross things.

The CW version somewhat different, and has also apparently shortened the title to just ‘Powerpuff’ to help differentiate it from the animated series. In this iteration, The Powerpuff Girls are no longer America’s pre-teen, pint-sized superheroes. They’re now disillusioned twentysomethings who resent having lost their childhood to crime-fighting. Will they agree to reunite now that the world needs them more than ever?

Donald Faison takes the part of Professor Utonium, the man who created the three extraordinary girls in his lab. Quirky, debonair, and a pinch narcissistic, Utonium is immensely proud of his creations, but as he’s staring down a midlife crisis, he is determined to repair his relationships with his now-adult daughters.

Faison you will probably know best from the hit comedy ‘Scrubs’, where he played the role of Turk. More recently, he has appeared in ‘Ray Donovan’, and short-lived ABC sci-fi ‘Emergence’, along with voicing characters on ‘Star Wars: Resistance’, ‘Robot Chicken’ and ‘Vampirina’.

Nicholas Podany is set to play Joseph “Jojo” Mondel Jr. As a kid, the nerdy, power-hungry, insecure JoJo was obsessed with The Powerpuff Girls, despite his father’s grudge against them. As an adult, JoJo finds his sweetness and rage in constant battle. This would appear to be the son of Mojo Jojo, the diabolical, cunning, evil genius mastermind who did battle with the Powerpuff Girls. He was also a mutant chimpanzee in the cartoon…

Podany played Max on the series ‘Hart of Dixie’, and is next due to appear in Netflix horror drama ‘Archive 81’. He also previously appeared as Albus Potter in the Broadway production of ‘Harry Potter and the Cursed Child’.

These two latest additions will join the previously announced cast of Chloe Bennet (‘Agents Of SHIELD’) who takes the role of Blossom, Dove Cameron (‘Descendants’) who is set to play Bubbles, and Yana Perrault who makes her on-screen debut as Buttercup.

The script for the pilot comes from Diablo Cody, best known for the brilliant movie ‘Juno’, and dramedy series ‘United States of Tara’, alongside Heather Regnier, who has written on shows such as ‘Veronica Mars’‘Sleepy Hollow’‘Falling Skies’ and ‘iZombie’.  Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros TV would produce the series. Cody and Regnier exec produce along with Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and David Madden from Berlanti Prods.

‘The Powerpuff Girls‘ is currently a pilot so may not go to series, but we’ll let you know if/when we hear more.
