Geektown BTS Podcast 42: ‘Concrete Cowboy’ Composer Kevin Matley Interview

On this episode of the Geektown Behind The Scenes Podcast, I’m chatting with Kevin Matley, composer of the film Concrete Cowboy, which is available to watch right now on Netflix UK and worldwide.

The movie stars Caleb McLaughlin as Cole, a troubled teen who is sent to live with his estranged father, played by Idris Elba, for the Summer, and finds himself caught between a life of crime and his father’s vibrant urban-cowboy subculture. The film is based on the novel ‘Ghetto Cowboy’ by G. Neri, but these urban riders do actually exist in areas of Philly and Brooklyn in the USA.

For the film’s score, Kevin purposefully worked with a smaller orchestra and only had them record 1-2 takes in order to expose the humanity within the playing. In order to amplify the intensity for some of the heightened scenes, Kevin picked up everyday items like buckets, bottles, and frypans for the percussionist to use, adding a raw element to his ambient score.
