It’s the end of the road for ‘Black-ish‘ as series creator Kenya Barris announces the comedy has been renewed for an 8th and final season… And before anyone asks, no, still no news on when it’ll return to the UK…
‘Black-ish’, follows The Johnsons, an upper-middle-class African-American family led by Andre ‘Dre’ (Anthony Anderson) and Rainbow ‘Bow’ (Tracee Ellis Ross) Johnson. Like any parent, want to give their children the best, but their offspring’s childhood is turning out to be much different than theirs.
“To ALL the people in the world I love, honour, respect and care for it is both exciting and bittersweet to share that black-ish been RENEWED by ABC for it’s EIGHTH… and FINAL SEASON,” comment Barris on an Instagram post. “In this day and age it is rare to get to decide when your show should come to an end, and we are grateful along with ABC to be able to make this final season exactly what we’d hoped for – and to do it with the entire and AMAZINGLY STELLAR cast coming back to close this chapter out with us the right way!”
That steelar cast includes Anthony Anderson as Andre “Dre” Johnson, Tracee Ellis Ross as Rainbow Johnson, Yara Shahidi as Zoey Johnson, Marcus Scribner as Andre Johnson Jr., Miles Brown as Jack Johnson, Marsai Martin as Diane Johnson, Laurence Fishburne as Pops, Jenifer Lewis as Ruby, Peter Mackenzie as Mr. Stevens, Deon Cole as Charlie Telphy and Jeff Meacham as Josh.
Over the course of its run, ‘Black-ish’ has received 15 Emmy nominations, including Outstanding Comedy, Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy (Anthony Anderson), Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy (Tracee Ellis Ross) and Outstanding Contemporary Costume (Michelle R. Cole and Devon Patterson). The series also received a prestigious Peabody Award in 2016 and the American Film Institute selected the show as one of their Television Honorees for 2015. Tracee Ellis Ross won a Golden Globe Award in 2017 for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series, Comedy.
‘Black-ish‘ has been airing on E4 in the UK, however, we are currently still waiting for Season 6 to emerge on the “wheel of fortune” that is E4’s scheduling process… It’s entirely possible they haven’t picked it up at all, and it may eventually land on Disney+/STAR, which already has Seasons 1-5 in the UK, but we’ll have to wait and see! The comedy airs on ABC in the USA.
