New Batman Animated Series From Bruce Timm, With EPs J.J. Abrams & Matt Reeves Lands At HBO Max/Cartoon Network

Batman returns, in animated form, HBO Max & Cartoon Network had a straight-to-series order to Batman: Caped Crusader, from ‘Batman: The Animated Series’ creator Bruce Timm, with J.J. Abrams & Matt Reeves set to exec produce.

Utilizing state-of-the-art animation techniques and technologies available, this powerful creative partnership will once again reinvent Batman and his iconic rogue’s gallery with sophisticated storytelling, nuanced characters and intense action sequences all set in a visually striking world.

“We are beyond excited to be working together to bring this character back, to tell engrossing new stories in Gotham City,” commented Timm, Abrams and Reeves in a joint statement. “The series will be thrilling, cinematic and evocative of Batman’s noir roots, while diving deeper into the psychology of these iconic characters. We cannot wait to share this new world.”

Bruce Timm’s ‘Batman: The Animated Series’ ran for 4 seasons from 1992-95, and is often hailed as one of the best depictions of the caped crusader on-screen. The thematic complexity and dark aesthetics lifted it from your run-of-the-mill cartoon series to something which sat on a whole different level.

“Batman: The Animated Series was a masterpiece that shaped the perception of the character for an entire generation of fans,” adds Warner Bros. Animation president Sam Register. “It is in that spirit that we are bringing together three master storytellers in J.J., Matt and Bruce – each with their own intuitive understanding and affection for the character – to create a new series that will continue in the same groundbreaking legacy.”

Matt Reeves is, of course, currently hard at work bringing the next live-action Batman to the big screen in the shape of Robert Pattinson. Whilst J.J. Abrams isn’t (as far as we know!) directly working on a Batman property, he is currently deep in the DC Comics world developing a live-action ‘Justice League Dark’ series for HBO Max, and believed to have some involvement in some of the other DC projects currently in the works.

“It is always fun to feed the insatiable appetite fans have for all things Batman,” said Tom Ascheim, President, Warner Bros. Global Kids, Young Adults and Classics in a statement. “Batman: Caped Crusader will entertain first time and die-hard fans alike and, with such an impressive creative team in place, we know we have another future Batman classic in the making.”

Batman: Caped Crusader is set to air in the USA on HBO Max and Cartoon Network. It’s still way too early to know where this may land in the UK, but if you want to keep track of this series you can add it via our Never Miss system, and you’ll be notified when it gets a UK premiere date.

In the meantime, they have released a poster for the show, which you can see below!
