Jeremy Irvine Officially Lands A Lead Role In HBO Max’s ‘Green Lantern’ Series

HBO Max’s Green Lantern has officially found the second actor to wield a power ring, as ‘Treadstone’ actor Jeremy Irvine reveals he will be playing Alan Scott in the upcoming series.

Based on the DC comic books, the series will span decades and galaxies, beginning on Earth in 1941 with the very first Green Lantern, secretly gay FBI agent Alan Scott, and 1984, with cocky alpha male Guy Gardner and half-alien Bree Jarta. They’ll be joined by a multitude of other Lanterns – from comic book favourites to never-before-seen heroes.

Created by Bill Finger and Martin Nodell, the character of Alan Scott dates way back to 1940, and was the first to take the moniker of Green Lantern. His origins and background have morphed and changed over the years, but have always somewhat different to the wider established mythology of the other Green Lanterns. He was a founding member of the Justice Society of America, but was never a member of the Green Lantern Corps itself. The version they are using for the tv show seems to be based on the Green Lantern of Earth 2 that was created by James Robinson in 2011.

Jeremy Irvine began his career in the Disney show ‘Life Bites’, before landing his big break in the 2011 movie ‘War Horse’. He went on to appear as Pho in Mike Newell’s adaptation of ‘Great Expectations’, played young Sam in ‘Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again’, and most recently starred in the USA Network series ‘Treadstone’.

Irvine joins Finn Wittrock (American Horror Story’, ‘Ratched’) who has previously been cast in the role of Guy Gardner. The actor made the announcement on social media reciting the Green Lantern oath:

The 10-episode hourlong series is written and exec produced by Greg Berlanti, Marc Guggenheim and Seth Grahame-Smith, with Grahame-Smith also serving as showrunner. Geoff Johns, Sarah Schechter, David Madden and David Katzenberg also exec produce, with Elizabeth Hunter and Sara Saedi as co-exec producers. Berlanti Productions produce the series in association with Warner Bros. Television. Lee Toland Krieger (‘Superman & Lois’, ‘Riverdale’) is set to direct the first two episodes of the series.

Green Lantern‘ Season 1 will premiere on HBO Max in the USA. We have no idea where it may land in the UK, as the DC superhero shows have been spread across Sky One, E4, Netflix and Amazon, so any of those are a possibility! If you want to keep track of this show you can add it via our Never Miss system, and you’ll be notified when it gets a UK premiere date.
