‘The Orville’ Season 3 Finally Wraps Filming

It’s been 27 months+ since The Orville took to the stars, but creator and star Seth MacFarlane announced today that Season 3 has finally wrapped filming.

“And that is a wrap on season 3 of The Orville!,” commented MacFarlane. “Thank you to our incredible cast and crew for all their tireless and brilliant work, and I sincerely hope this is not the last time we all go to space.”

The series, for those of you who have somehow missed it, is a live-action sci-fi dramedy, space adventure set 400 years in the future that follows The Orville, a mid-level exploratory spaceship. Its crew, both human and alien, face the wonders and dangers of outer space, while also dealing with the familiar, often humorous, problems of everyday life. The ensemble series stars MacFarlane as the ship’s Commanding Officer and Adrianne Palicki (‘Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’, ‘Friday Night Lights’) as his ex-wife, who’s assigned as his First Officer.

The extended delay for season three happened due to multiple reasons. Firstly, the obvious issue of a global pandemic, which is hard to film, especially when you’re a show dealing with a lot of prosthetics that require close contact. The second was the “more ambitious” nature of the third season, and MacFarlane’s workload, which prompted Disney to move the show from FOX onto Hulu. For UK viewers, the series will appear via STAR on Disney+ when it is released.

Alongside MacFarlane and Palicki, the series stars Penny Johnson Jerald as Dr. Claire Finn (’24,’ ‘The Larry Sanders Show’), Scott Grimes as Gordon Malloy (‘ER,’ ‘Justified’), Peter Macon as Bortus (‘Shameless,’ ‘Bosch’), Jessica Szohr as Talla Keyali (‘Shameless’, ‘Kingdom’), J. Lee as John LaMarr (‘Family Guy’, ‘The Cleveland Show’), Mark Jackson as Isaac (‘That Royal Today’), and Chad L. Coleman as Klyden (‘The Walking Dead,’ ‘The Wire’).

They will be joined by a couple of new faces next season. Eliza Taylor (‘The 100’) is set to play an undisclosed character (who is apparently going to be under prosthetics), and Anne Winters (’13 Reasons Why’) is set to play a character called “Charly Burke”.

Whilst principal photography has wrapped, we suspect there will still be a pile of fx work to do on the series, which should keep the lovely folk over at FuseFX busy for a few months yet. We’ve waited 27 months, we can wait a little longer for them to get it all polished.

One other thing we should comment on is the stories you might have seen that this is the final season. Those internet rumours came from some very less than reliable sources, so I wouldn’t put too much stock in them. Hulu has not cancelled or renewed the series, which is exactly what you would expect at this point before the third season has even aired. MacFarlane himself did sign an overall deal with NBCUniversal earlier this year, and is currently developing a ‘Ted‘ tv series, based on the character from his movies, which was handed a straight-to-series order for Peacock.

The Orville‘ Season 3 does not yet have a premiere date, but it will air on Hulu in the USA and via STAR on Disney+ in the UK. If you want to keep track of this or any other shows, you can add them via our Never Miss system, and you’ll be notified when they get a UK premiere date.
