‘Derry Girls’ To End With Season 3

Channel 4’s Derry Girls is set to end with the (much delayed) 3rd Season the show’s creator has announced. This is not a cancellation, but a planned ending.

‘Derry Girls’ is the creation of acclaimed writer Lisa McGee who has mined her own experiences to create a candid, one-of-a-kind, family-centred comedy. While Season 1 saw the gang navigating their teens in 1990’s Derry against a backdrop of The Troubles, Season 2 saw them navigating their parents, parties, love interests and school against the backdrop of a precarious peace process. Northern Ireland is growing up – this gang of eejits certainly aren’t.

“It was always the plan to say goodbye after three series,” commented creator Lisa McGee in a social media post. “Derry Girls is a coming of age story following five ridiculous teenagers as they slowly… very slowly… start to become adults, while around them the place they call home starts to change too and Northern Ireland enters a new more hopeful phase – which was a small, magical window of time. Derry Girls is a love letter to the place I come from and the people who shaped me. It has been an honour to write it and I will be forever proud of everything it’s achieved.”

She continues “Who knows if Erin, Clare, Orla, Michelle and James will return in some other guise someday, but for now this is it for us and we’re excited to start filming this series with our incredible cast and crew to hopefully take our loyal fans on one last adventure.”

The series first launched in 2018 and gave Channel 4 their largest UK comedy premiere in 15 years. The 2nd Season aired in 2019 on Channel 4 in the UK and Netflix internationally. The 3rd Season was originally planned for 2020, but filming was delayed due to the global pandemic. However, they are due to return to shooting later this week on Season 3.

Seasons 1 & 2 of ‘Derry Girls‘ can be found on All4 in the UK and Netflix internationally. If you want to keep track of this or any other shows, you can add them via our Never Miss system, and you’ll be notified when they get a UK premiere date.
