Geektown Awards – Best New & Returning Comic Book Series

The last categories for today (more coming tomorrow!) are ‘Best New Comic Book Series’ and ‘Best Returning Comic Book Series’. These are often the most fiercely fought awards, and this year was no exception. Whilst the “returning” category winner had a comfortable lead, the “new” category was flipped back and forth between the top few shows throughout the voting… Although it was pretty clear, whoever won, it would be “Marvel”lous…

Best New Comic Book Series

Nominees: Falcon and the Winter Soldier – Disney+, Hawkeye – Disney+, Invincible – Amazon, Loki – Disney+, Marvel’s What If…? – Disney+, Resident Alien – Sky, Sweet Tooth – Netflix, WandaVision – Disney+, Y: The Last Man – Disney+

Bronze: Hawkeye – Disney+

Silver: WandaVision – Disney+

And the Gold goes to …

Winner: Loki – Disney+

It was a closely fought battle, but the God Of Mischief, Loki, ended up victorious, beating both ‘WandaVision’ and ‘Hawkeye’ to the top spot (for those of you that were wondering, poor old ‘Falcon and the Winter Soldier’ was way down the list…) The series saw Tom Hiddleston return to the beloved character of Loki as he steps out of his brother’s shadow in a new series that takes place after the events of ‘Avengers: Endgame’… We’ll, a “variant” of Loki, in this case, the one we saw absconding with the Tesseract in the MCU film.

I think it’s fair to say, Marvel has been crushing it with their Disney+ tv series, and ‘Loki’ was a great and fun expansion to the MCU. Not only with the ever watchable Tom Hiddleston returning to the title role, but also the introduction of Owen Wilson as Mobius, Sophia Di Martino as Sylvie, Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Ravonna Renslayer, and Jonathan Majors as He Who Remains. Add to that a crocodile and Richard E. Grant, and the result is a wonderful, funny, action-packed, head-spinner of a series, which ties in brilliantly to the wider MCU.

Best Returning Comic Book Series

Nominees: Doom Patrol (Season 3) – StarzPlay, Legends Of Tomorrow (Season 6) – Sky, Lucifer (Season 6) – Netflix, Stargirl (Season 2) – Amazon, The Walking Dead (Season 11) – Disney+, The Walking Dead: World Beyond (Season 2) – Amazon

Bronze: Legends Of Tomorrow (Season 6) – Sky

Silver: The Walking Dead (Season 10/11) – Disney+

And the Gold goes to …

Winner: Lucifer (Season 6) – Netflix

It’s the second year in a row for Lucifer, as the sixth season takes the top spot for the final time. ‘Lucifer’ follows Lucifer Morningstar (Tom Ellis), the original fallen angel, who became dissatisfied with his life in hell. Retiring to L.A., he inadvertently teams up with an LAPD detective (Lauren German) to help punish criminals. Joining him on Earth is his angelic brother Amenadiel (D. B. Woodside), and his former head torturer demon turned bounty hunter Mazikeen (Lesley-Ann Brandt).

It is also the second award this year for ‘Lucifer’, having also landed the top spot in the ‘Best Returning Scifi/Fantasy Series’. Not a bad way to end their run!
