Disney+ has placed a ten-episode series order for ‘Goosebumps‘, a new children’s drama from Sony Pictures Television, based on R. L. Stine’s hugely popular books series.
The series follows a group of five high schoolers who unleash supernatural forces upon their town and must all work together – thanks to and in spite of their friendships, rivalries, and pasts with each other – in order to save it, learning much about their own parents’ teenage secrets in the process.
The spooky drama comes from Nick Stoller (‘The Muppets’, ‘Friends from College’) and Rob Letterman (‘Detective Pikachu’, ‘Monsters vs. Aliens’), who also serve as exec producers. Neal H. Moritz, who produced the 2015 ‘Goosebumps’ film which Letterman directed, also exec produces. Pavun Shetty of Original Film, Conor Welch of Stoller Global Solutions, and Iole Lucchese and Caitlin Friedman of Scholastic Entertainment are also exec produce.
The original Goosebumps books have sold over 400 million copies in English alone, and have also been translated into 32 languages. Assuming the tv series takes off, they are not short of material to work with, as there are over 200 books to choose from!
This would be the second R. L. Stine adaptation for Disney+, having previously adapted ‘Just Beyond’, based on his graphic novels. It’s also not the first time ‘Goosebumps’ itself has been adapted for tv. A previous version ran from 1995-98 on FOX Kids in the USA and YTV in Canada.
‘Goosebumps‘ does not yet have a premiere date, but if you want to keep track of this or any other shows, you can add them via our Never Miss system, and you’ll be notified when they get a UK premiere date.
