‘Metropolis’: Apple TV+ Orders Series From Sam Esmail Based On Fritz Lang Sci-Fi Classic
Apple TV+ has ordered ‘Metropolis‘, a new drama inspired by the seminal Fritz Lang science fiction work of the same name, from ‘Mr. Robot’ creator Sam Esmail.
The original silent film was released in 1927 and is widely considered one of the first science fiction movies, and whilst critically panned when it premiered, has become seen as a massively influential work, often appearing on Top 100 film lists, and lauded by critics and filmmaker alike. One of the most notable influences in pop culture being on ‘Star Wars’ designer Ralph McQuarrie, who based C-3PO on the robot Maschinenmensch featured in the movie.
‘Metropolis’ is set in a dystopian futuristic city that is sharply divided between the working class and the city planners. There, the son of the city’s mastermind falls in love with a working-class prophet who predicts the coming of a saviour to mediate their differences.
The series will be written and directed in its entirety by Esmail, who also serves as showrunner. It will be executive produced by Esmail via his overall deal with UCP, and Chad Hamilton. UCP, a division of Universal Studio Group, serves as the studio.
The drama has been in the works for a while, with news of it first being in development by Esmail back in 2016. Esmail himself has been keeping very busy since ‘Mr. Robot’ came to an end. He is also behind the upcoming Watergate scandal drama ‘Gaslit‘ for Starz, and is developing ‘Battlestar Galactica’ reboot/continuation series for Peacock. He also made the much overlooked ‘Briarpatch’ drama for USA Network, and Amazon series ‘Homecoming’.
‘Metropolis‘ does, obviously, not yet have a premiere date, but will air on Apple TV+ worldwide. If you want to keep track of this or any other show, you can add it via our Never Miss system, and you’ll be notified when it gets a UK premiere date.
