Doctor Who: Legend of the Sea Devils Gets Easter Sunday Premiere
The next outing of ‘Doctor Who‘ has been set as the BBC announce ‘Doctor Who: Legend of the Sea Devils’ will premiere on Easter Sunday 2022 on BBC One and iPlayer.
In a swashbuckling special adventure, the Doctor (Jodie Whittaker), Yaz (Mandip Gill) and Dan (John Bishop) come face to fin with one of the Doctor’s oldest adversaries: the Sea Devils. Why has legendary pirate queen Madam Ching come searching for a lost treasure? What terrifying forces lurk beneath the oceans of the nineteenth century? And did Yaz really have to dress Dan up as a pirate?
This will mark the first time the Sea Devils have really appeared in “new Who”, having last had their own story in the 1984 story “Warriors of the Deep” opposite Peter Davidson’s Fifth Doctor. This is the penultimate outing for Jodie’s Thirteenth Doctor, who gets one last go around in Autumn 2022 before regenerating into… well, who knows at this point!
‘Doctor Who: Legend of the Sea Devils’ is written by current showrunner Chris Chibnall alongside screenwriter/playwright Ella Road (‘Ten Percent’, ‘The Phlebotomist’). Haolu Wang directs the episode. Crystal Yu (‘Casualty’), Arthur Lee (‘Lucky Man’), and Marlowe Chan-Reeves as also set to star.
Following Jodie’s final appearance in the Autumn, Russell T Davies retakes the TARDIS keys alongside a new Doctor with a new series due to arrive in 2023 as part of the BBC’s Centenary celebrations. As to who that new Doctor will be, all sorts of names have been thrown about. Those include the return of David Tennant or occasional comedy partner Michael Sheen; ‘It’s A Sin’ stars Lydia West or Olly Alexander; Then there’s Hugh Grant, Michaela Coel, Paterson Joseph, Russel Tovey or Richard Ayoade… Chances are it will be none of these people and will be a total surprise, but we’ll have to wait and see!
