During a brief moment of sobriety, the schedulers at E4 have managed to finally set UK premiere dates for both ‘Young Sheldon‘ Season 5 & ‘The Goldbergs‘ Season 9 the broadcaster has announced.
‘Young Sheldon’ follows nine-year-old Sheldon Cooper (Iain Armitage) as he struggles with growing up in East Texas. Possessing a once-in-a-generation mind capable of advanced mathematics and science isn’t always helpful in a land where church and football are kings. And, while the vulnerable, gifted and naive Sheldon deals with the world, his family must find a way to deal with him.
Alongside Armitage, the series stars Zoe Perry as Sheldon’s mother, Mary (Perry also being the real-life daughter of Laurie Metcalf, who played Mary in the main series.) Lance Barber stars as father George, whilst Montana Jordan plays older brother Georgie, and Raegan Revord rounds out the family as twin sister Missy.
Opening with a double-bill, the first episode of the new series sees Sheldon and Missy both run away from home, while Mary gets some upsetting news about her husband, George. Episode two sees Sheldon welcome Missy to the world of atheism by encouraging her to question the Bible, whilst Mary helps Pastor Jeff search for a youth pastor.
‘The Goldbergs’ follows the titular family’s escapades in 1980s Pennsylvania. Narrator Adam (Sean Giambrone, with his future self voiced by Patton Oswald) just wants to grow up as a normal, nerdy teenager – and possibly become the world’s greatest filmmaker. That looks pretty unlikely when he’s constantly battling his own family: there’s his smothering but well-meaning mother Beverly (Wendi McLendon-Covey – ‘Bridesmaids’), his hot-tempered dad Murray (Jeff Garlin – ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’), rebellious and musical sister Erica (Hayley Orrantia), emotional and idiotic brother Barry (Troy Gentile) and beloved grandfather Pops (George Segal – ‘Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?’). While the Goldbergs might not always see eye to eye, in this sweet-natured comedy family always comes first.
Also airing as a double-bill, the first episode sees the family looking for a way to honour Pops’ memory. Episode two sees Beverly disrupt Adam’s college admission plans, whilst Erica discovers that her future father-in-law blames her for a prank she didn’t pull.
‘The Goldbergs‘ Season 9 kicks things off on Sunday, 24th April 2022 at 7pm on E4 with a double-bill, followed by ‘Young Sheldon‘ Season 5 at 8pm, also with a double-bill. It would seem both shows will continue to air double episodes weekly (although, this is E4, so their “drunk scheduling” policy may kick in at any moment and things will get moved!)
