‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ Season 5 Gets New Trailer
‘The Handmaid’s Tale‘ returns later this year for a 5th Season and US streaming service Hulu has dropped a new teaser trailer showing that June is not out of the woods just yet!
The Emmy and Golden Globe Award-winning series stars Elisabeth Moss as a handmaid in Gilead, a totalitarian society in what was formerly part of the United States. Facing environmental disasters and a plunging birth rate, Gilead is ruled by a twisted fundamentalist regime that treats fertile women as property of the state.
The fifth season appears to about to confirm that “actions have consequences” for June (Moss) following the events of the season four finale (SPOILER WARNING)… If you remember where we left things, June had lured her former Commander Fred (Joseph Fiennes) into a trap under the pretence of a prisoner exchange. Dumped in No Man’s Land, Fred is beaten to death by June and a group of other handmaids and then hung on a wall. Meanwhile, as Serena (Yvonne Strahovski) is waiting for a video call from her now-dead husband, a mail carrier checking Serena’s post opens an envelope containing Fred’s wedding ring… and ring finger…
As we enter the fifth season June should (in theory) be relatively safe now she is in Canada with her husband Luke (O. T. Fagbenle). However, June still has unfinished business – “I want her to know that it was me”, she comments, so is obviously (and understandably) not prepared to leave it alone. As the world watches on, Serena is busy playing the grieving widow (although we’re dubious as to how much she is actually grieving for her abusive other half) but her attempt helps to raise her profile in Toronto as Gilead’s influence creeps into Canada. Either way, the fundamentalist regime are likely to want some sort of recourse for a Handmaid murdering her former Commander, which potentially puts June right in the crosshairs of an international incident. Back in Gilead itself, Commander Lawrence (Bradley Whitford) works with Aunt Lydia (Ann Dowd) as he tries to reform the nation and rise in power. June, Luke, and Moira (Samira Wiley) fight Gilead from a distance as they continue their mission to save and reunite with June’s daughter, Hannah.
‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ is executive produced by Bruce Miller, Warren Littlefield, Elisabeth Moss, Daniel Wilson, Fran Sears, Eric Tuchman, John Weber, Frank Siracusa, Sheila Hockin, Kira Snyder and Yahlin Chang.
The series airs Wednesday, September 14th, 2022, with a two-episode premiere on Hulu in the USA, and is usually one or two months behind on Channel 4 in the UK. If you’re wondering why this isn’t coming to Disney+ UK, ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ is made by an outside company, not Hulu/Disney, so Disney doesn’t own the rights outside of the USA. It also is under a preexisting deal with Channel 4, so they should continue to air it here. We’ll let you know if that changes.
‘The Handmaid’s Tale‘ Season 5 does not yet have a UK premiere date, but is likely to air in Autumn 2022 on Channel 4. If you want to keep track of this or any other show, you can add it via our Never Miss system, and you’ll be notified when it gets a UK premiere date.
