‘Eragon’ Series In Development At Disney+

Disney+ has put into development a series based on ‘Eragon’ and “The Inheritance Cycle” series of novels, according to author Christopher Paolini.

News of the project had leaked earlier, but Paolini took to social media yesterday to confirm it was true. “As you may have seen, there was an unplanned announcement earlier this week, but yes, it’s true-an Eragon television series is in development at Disney+, and I’m attached to both co-write and produce! And yes, I’m extremely excited for what the future holds,” commented the author on social media. “At the moment, I can’t go into details-it’s still early days with regard to this project, but I can say that I’m very pleased with the team I’m working with at 20th Television, Disney Branded Television, and Disney +. These are smart, passionate people, and I’m looking forward to making the best possible Eragon/Inheritance Cycle adaptation with them.”

For those of you that don’t know ‘Eragon’, the story follows a teenage boy who becomes magically joined with a newly-hatched dragon. Together, they must learn what it means to be dragon and rider as they fight in the resistance against a tyrannical king.

‘Eragon’ is the first book in “The Inheritance Cycle” series of novels. Released in 2003, the book sat on the New York Times Children’s Books Best Seller list for 121 weeks and was made into a movie in 2006 starring Ed Speleers, Jeremy Irons, John Malkovich, Robert Carlyle and Rachel Weisz. “The Inheritance Cycle” consists of five novels, and has sold 33.5 million copies worldwide.

“It’s thrilling to be working with Christopher on a Disney + adaptation of Eragon. Like with Percy Jackson, 20th and D+ are providing a chance for us to translate these stories to film in the way their millions of fans deserve,” adds Co-Lab 21’s Bert Salke, who is set to exec produce alongside Paolini under his overall deal with Disney Television Studios. “We’re incredibly excited to find the showrunner/partner who will help us bring the Eragon story to screens around the world.”

As Paolini says, it is still early days at the moment, so there is no casting, and the project is still “in development” so it is possible it still won’t move forward, but we’ll bring you more as we get it.

“This has been a long time coming,” continues Paolini. “I can’t tell you how many conversations, meetings, and messages were needed in order to reach this point. And we’re still just at the beginning! However, none of this would have been possible without everyone who has read the books, supported the tweetstorms, and participated in this fandom over the years. So a huge thank you from me to every Alagaësian out there. You brought the thunder.”

The ‘Eragon’ tv series is currently classed as “in development” so may or may not move forward. If it does, it will air on Disney+. We’ll let you know if and when we hear more.
