Star Trek Day News Roundup: Trailers, Casting, Premiere Dates & More!

Yesterday was officially “Star Trek Day” – the day where, in 1966, the original beloved series first premiered on US tv. To celebrate, Paramount aired a live stream from LA packed with interviews, trailers, tributes, and behind-the-scenes tours. Here is a round-up of what you may have missed.

Star Trek: Picard: Season 3 Trailer & Premiere Date

‘Star Trek: Picard’ returns for a 3rd and final season in February 2023, and we got our first proper look at what to expect for the last outing of Jean Luc and pals. The new season is a little different from the previous two, as it will reunite most of the Next Generation bridge crew for one more mission, alongside returning faces from seasons one and two. LeVar Burton, Michael Dorn, Gates McFadden, Marina Sirtis, Brent Spiner, Jeri Ryan, and Michelle Hurd are all set to star.

The other big reveal in the trailer is the live-action introduction of the U.S.S. Titan, which now appears to be under the command of Ryan’s Seven Of Nine (or at least she seems to be the one giving the iconic command to “Engage!”) If you’re wondering, this isn’t the same ship Riker took command of after leaving the Enterprise. This is actually the Titan-A, a new version of a Constitution-Class ship, different to Riker’s Luna-Class version.

Star Trek: Picard Season 3 premieres Thursday, February 16, 2023 on Paramount+ in the USA. Prime Video retains the global rights to the series outside of the USA, so the drama should land Friday, 17th February 2023 on Prime Video UK (although that is not yet officially confirmed.)

Star Trek: Discovery: Season 5 Photo & Behind-The-Scenes Set Tour

Hopping into the future with Star Trek: Discovery, they dropped a “first-look” photo from Season 5, featuring Sonequa Martin-Green’s Captain Burnham on some sort of motorbike-style vehicle. Not really much really to be gained from that, other than Burnham looks badass (which we already knew!)

They also released a Set Tour video where Wilson Cruz (Dr. Hugh Culber) gives a behind-the-scenes look at the ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ Season 5 set. Keep an eye out for appearances from Sonequa Martin-Green (Michael Burnham), Mary Wiseman (Sylvia Tilly), Blu del Barrio (Adira), and Anthony Rapp (Dr. Paul Stamets).

We don’t yet have a premiere date for Star Trek: Discovery Season 5, but it will air on Paramount+ in the UK and USA when it does land.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds: Season 2 Clip & New Casting

For Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, they dropped an exclusive clip of Season 2 featuring Lt. Erica Ortegas (Melissa Navia), who is excited for a rare away team assignment with Captain Pike (Anson Mount), Lt. La’An Noonien-Singh (Christina Chong), and Dr. M’Benga (Babs Olosukomun).

They also announced a new crew member on the Enterprise. Academy Award nominee Carol Kane will be joining the series in a recurring role as Pelia, highly educated and intelligent, this engineer suffers no fools. Pelia solves problems calmly and brusquely, thanks to her many years of experience. Kane is probably best known for her role as Simka Gravas in 80s comedy ‘Taxi’, which won her two Emmys, and more recently for playing Lillian Kaushtupper in Netflix’s beloved comedy ‘Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’.

For those of you who were put off by “new” Trek, with ‘Discovery’ not feeling “Trekkie” enough, I really urge you to check out ‘Strange New Worlds’ if you haven’t already. It has action, drama, and a shipload of fun. It really is the spiritual successor to the Original Series you have been looking for.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2 does not yet have a premiere date, but will air on Paramount+ in the UK and USA when it does land.

Star Trek: Lower Decks: A “Sneak Peek” at Upcoming Episode

Moving onto the animated shows, Star Trek: Lower Decks dropped a “sneak peek” at the upcoming episode “Crisis Point 2: Paradoxus” in which Boimler’s holodeck movie sequel tries to live up to the original…

The series follows the Starfleet crew residing in the “lower decks” of the U.S.S. Cerritos, which includes Ensign Beckett Mariner, voiced by Tawny Newsome; Ensign Brad Boimler, voiced by Jack Quaid; Ensign Tendi, voiced by Noël Wells; and Ensign Rutherford, voiced by Eugene Cordero. The Starfleet characters that comprise the U.S.S. Cerritos’ bridge crew include Captain Carol Freeman, voiced by Dawnn Lewis; Commander Jack Ransom, voiced by Jerry O’Connell; Lieutenant Shaxs, voiced by Fred Tatasciore; and Doctor T’Ana, voiced by Gillian Vigman.

Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 3 is currently airing on Prime Video in the UK and Paramount+ in the USA.

Star Trek Online: Wil Wheaton Returns As Wesley Crusher In “Ascension”

Wil Wheaton makes his debut in the Star Trek Online video game as an alternate universe version of Wesley Crusher. “Ascension” is the next chapter in the Mirror Universe story arc for the free-to-play MMORPG. The trailer reveals that the game’s Terran Emperor is actually the Mirror version of Wesley Crusher, voiced by none other than Wil Wheaton himself! In order to stop the Terran Emperor from threatening both the Prime and Mirror Universes, the Federation will need to stop him from controlling The Other, all while fighting off his forces led by the dreaded Captain Killy (voiced by Mary Wiseman from Discovery).

‘Star Trek Online: Ascension’ will launch on PC from 13th September 2022 and land on consoles at a later date.
